Looking for some input on purchasing the best programmer. Ive done some reading and a lot of people like the ease of the PPE and the performance. I have also read that a lot of people like the Edge.

The PPE is sounds simple, plug it in...run the tune and your done.
The Edge is sounds like you pick your tune and go.

The only downfall I see with the PPE is that you have to buy some gauges to monitor some engine parameters. With the Edge you can mount the monitor in the upper console and monitor 4 readings at one time.

Being that i have a heavy dually, I'm looking for good performance for towing and gas mileage. I'm not looking to race this thing...thats what I got the Z28 for.

I would like to get input from people that have the PPE and the Edge. I just want to try and get the best bang for the buck! Thanks in advance!

Edge will probably be your best bet. On the fly shifting, and it does have the guages. However, i'm not really a firm believer in the attitude gauges, because you just don't get as acurate readings as you do with mechanical guages.

I have to agree with you there on the mechanical gauges, they are more accurate and dependable. Thanks for the input.

(not trying to start a brand war) Ive never ran edge on my truck but Ive just heard stories about edge and 1st gen. dmax's not getting along. Im sure there are many people out there who have them who havent had a problem yet (its probably like the injector problems our trucks have). As for the gauges sure thats great. Accurate???????
While the edge has gauges the PPE can check and clear codes along with speedometer corrections for different sized tires and much more. I guess Id just read up as much as you can about the 2, try visiting their websites. Ive never heard anyone complain about the PPE and the customer service is great. I hear edge has good customer support as well. Its up to you. Come to think of it....I dont think Ive ever heard of anyone trying to choose one of the 2 for fuel economy :D

I vote for the PPE. ;) I had edge but did not appreciate it shutting down the truck randomly, but maybe by now they have fixed the problem. I personally would not risk my safety and others with it, but that is just my two cents. Good luck with the decision and keep us informed on what you go with.

come to think of it, i do remember reading somewhere how our 1st gen duramax engines did have a problem with the edge. to be honest i was just going with the edge simply because it has the monitor. but for being able to clear codes and change tires sizes with the ppe sounds like a sweet deal. I do like the look of the gauges on the pillar, and as for the monitor it does look nice in the overhead console. Regardless, like you, I'm not trying to start a battle between the two programmers im just trying to get as much info as possible. thanks for the input

Shutting down? I assume thats in regards to the egt temps? You've brought up a good point there, if I'm towing, I dont want my truck just to shut down...that could turn into a real mess!!

Thanks for the help guys...youve changed my mind completely! i think im going to go with the PPE...

Since im not really looking for a race machine, I can just go with the ppe standard right? are there certain version of the PPE i need to stay away from?

The PPE standard has 5 levels. I bought the PPE economy a couple of months ago, which has the bottom 3 levels of the standard. It's about $50 cheaper. I use it mainly for towing, so 3 levels was plently for me, and that way I'm not tempted to get in trouble with levels 4 & 5. ;) I'm happy with the PPE.

It would usually shut down when i was slowing down for a stoplight. Even more common is to shut down when it is raining because of interfering electrical signals with the wipers. I rode in my buddies truck this past weekend, we went for a 100 mile round trip and his shut down on him randomly twice. I have not had one single problem with my PPE Standard. It has five levels and makes a lot of power. I have stock drive train therefore mine hasn't seen over level three but i am impressed. You really can't go wrong with ppe but you will have to add gauges. Hope this helps--

I too was part of the shutdown crowd. Mine shut down on my twice and it went back to Edge on a full refund. Never again will I put anything that says Edge on it in my truck. The PPE tuner is supposed to be VERY nice with good customer service. Good luck!

never had a problem with the Edge. Ran it for over 60k miles. Shift on the Fly was awesome! I bought the pillar mount for my Attitude and it was nicer than having it in the overhead console. It gave much more bite to the truck than does my Quad now. And as far as accurate readings....i think they were MORE accurate than my current gauges. Being digital they changed instantaneously where as i am seeing a lot of lag out of my DiPricols at times. Its really a coin-flip....figure out what you like and buy it. you wont be dissappointed in either.

I would say go with the PPE standard...i have found it online for $454 shipped brand new...which really isnt that bad.

I really like the idea of the edge monitor but have heard some people having problems with it.

for gauges...probably talking $250-300 for a pyro and boost

Where did you find it for $454.00

I have the Edge and my truck has shut down on me twice on the freeway.

I want to add the PPE standard on top of my Edge, will that be ok?

hope this helps.

Since I'm new to the diesel world...i dont have the knowledge base to be able to say that stacking the Edge and PPE will work. I'm sure people have done some stacking...but I dont know anything about it.

Fill out your sig so we know what you got done to you truck. If you are thinking out stacking stuff, just do away with the edge and get the PPE hot+2 that will be enough. Going to need a trans though;)

YEAH U COULD DO THAT IM RUNNING THE EDGE ATTIT/ JUICE STACKED WITH THE ATS E-POWER (THE SAME BOX AS PPE VERY SIMULAR TUNE) U MAY HAVE TO DO SOME FUEL DELEVERY UPGRADES TO RUN THE HIGHEST TUNES. I DO NOT HAVE A LIFT PUMP OR UPGRADED CP3 SO IM LIMITED TO LEVLE 2 ON EDGE OF 6 ( HAVE HOT UNLOCK L. 6) AND LEVLE 8 ON THE E POWER OF 10 TUNES. DEFINATLY RUNS LIKE A BAT OUT OF HE*l IN COLORADO I PUT DOWN A BEST TIME OF 12.9 STOCK TURBO BUT PRETTY CONSISTANT 13.3'S

Let Me Clear Up A Bit The E-power Is Very Simular To The Ppe Hot + 2. So To Run On Highest Tunes You May Not Need Any Fuel Delev. Mods. But I Highly Reccomend A Stronger Trans!

correct..... we stacked a PPE standard with a edge J/A, both on level 5.....limped it in about 45 minutes orrrrrr about the......10th time he layed on it. Heck youd probably need a built trans to handle either of them by themselves if you want to be hard on them.

Yeah Them Stock Alli's Do Not Hold Up For Long With About 100 Hp Over Stock As It Is. Definatly Want To Get A Trans Upgrade I Just Went Ahead And Did The Big Daddy Ats Extreme, But I Also Plan On Running In The Low 11's When Im Done. Injectors, Nos Twin Cp3's A- 5000 Turbo Or The Compound 3000 And 5000,, The Works.

I had the edge with attitude on my truck for about a year. it would kill my truck comin to a stop to. i just put on the ppe hot+2. this programmer is the best thing a lb7 will ever see. i picked up about 4 mpg and it runs so much smoother than the edge. if i was you dont even waste money on the edge products.

Ive ran both edge and ppe now. My advice, get a ppe standard set er on lvl 2 and forget about it. The only advantages with edge IMO, are the built i gauges and adjust on the fly. The adjust on the fly plays hell on the tranny if you have a hard time not playing with it (its hard not to with it right there in your face) And IMO the edge has sloppy tuning. Go PPE and buy yourself a set of guages. Itll cost the same and youll be much happier in the end

Its easy, you just need a bad injector pump.......like mine

94blackcamaroz2

Haha a bad injector pump huh? I was gonna say though...if you found a way to run your truck on setting 5 without hurting your stock allison, I bet you would be the king here!
