I have a 2000.4 Duramax with just over 5,600 miles I have had to add over two quarts of oil in less than 3000 miles, is this normal? I am running Shell Rolette. Thanks John A

I have an 04 and have never had to add oil and mine has about 18K on it.. I am not sure that is normal other than it would depend on your driving habits. Might want to consult the dealer on that one and see if there is something wrong. Good luck... Keep us posted...

No oil added here. Truck has 21000 (not driven so easy) miles on it. Have that checked and keep us posted.

Good Luck!

i have yet to add oil. but i have a question for you.

When are you checking your oil?

The oil takes awhile to return to the bottom for an accurate reading. You should check your oil first thing in the morning, before cranking, on a level surface. I did notice mine would show that it was low, after running. After waiting 10 minutes check again and it was getting better and then wait until morning and it was full again. I have 68K on mine already.

Where did you get your oil change?
How many quarts are on the paper? 10 quarts will fill it up just right.

Is the oil you use shell Rolette or Rotella? Rotella is all I have used, except one time I went with Castrol. I am running the Shell Rotella 5W40 Synthetic now.

i use mobil delvac 1 in my truck. ive never added oil in 26,000 miles of heavy footed driving and also change at 5,000 mile intervals. However, mobile delvac 1 is only sold in gallons. I add 2 full gallons (8 quarts) and then about half of the third gallon, which would be about 10 quarts. I do find though, to get it up to proper oil levels it takes closer to 11 quarts. My measuring is not exact by any stretch of the imagination, but going by feel, it feels like I need to pour a little more than half of that third gallon.

I checked mine this morning and it was 1 1/2 quart low, i add some and this rattle it did when its cold (that i blamed on the chip) almost went away and then engine seems a little quieter. i had not checked it before. the last oil change was done the the dealer about 8,000 miles ago. now i will be checking it more often. you think its burning oil? or the dealer maybe did not put enough oil in it?

tough to say. I want to say it was the dealers fault. I guess thinking back, I lied. I have added oil, once. I drove from here to Ft. Collins CO and when I pulled into Ft. Collins I was a quart low. But, I changed my oil right before I left. I change my oil in my driveway which is "pretty much level" . I have to say though that I believe my being a quart low was my fault as opposed to being a result of the truck burning oil.

I agree with jmg343, my 04.5 LLY takes 11 quarts to get to the full line when I change it, my LB7 only takes 10.

I have changed my own oil and have had to add a quart every thousand mile or so, I wondered if it was me at first but it is to consitent and I have been watching very close. I will take to the dealer as soon as I have a chance. I hope they dont blame it on the edge chip or the egr being disconected. Thanks for all the replies. John A

Mine always seems to be beyond the full line - so I open my Fumoto and dump some out but it always seems high, like it's getting all over the stick.

Question is as long as oil pressure doesn't read beyond say, 60-80, and never into the red, should I really worry if I'm running a little high on my oil level? I think I'd rather have too much than too little, as long as it's not overpressuring gaskets and stuff, right?

What could happen if you when to much over the full mark, and I'm sure it would take a lot on this motor, is you have the oil level so high that it would come in contact with the rotating mass of the crankshaft. And if this happens, you will induce air pockets into the oil, which could cause the oil pump to cavitate (suck air) and then you would lose pressure.

10 Qts is likely the capacity of the pan itself, not taking into consideration oil retained in turbo, oil filter, etc. Oil you add in an oil change goes straight there, so the level on your dipstick will certainly drop after you run the engine.

Most accurate method I've found: Pre-charge new filter with oil until it's full or very near before installing it. Once you've added all oil and installed your filter, disable the engine from starting and crank it with the key until your oil pressure gauge starts to read pressure. Let it set for a few minutes and double check your oil level. Top it off, enable your engine, and you should be good to go!

Not only does this help with accuracy in reading oil levels, it reduces wear and damage caused by cold starts, especially in your turbo, where the RPM's are often well over 100,000 RPM. :ro)

I just checked my father LB7 who also got his last oil change at the same dealer, he was also a quart and 1/2 low. i think the dealer in my case.
