03' dmax:

Shifting from park to reverse, start to back up, clunk.

Shift from reverse to drive, then shift back to reverse, wait a couple of seconds, clunk again.

Sounds like rear end clunk.

Has anyone else experienced this? I heard of some guys replacing rear ends for some reason and I am wondering if this is the reason?

I have 65,000 miles on the truck and have amsoil synthetic gear lube in since new.

I have also changed the fluid twice, and now inspected noise, and changed again.

I did not notice anything visibly wrong with gears?

Any help is good help.

I've had the same experience. I took into the stealer around 25K. They said its normal. So far no other problems..It's documented on my service contract. Not real comforting..

I haven't had any problem with my Dmax, but I did have the same issue with my s-10 blazer. Come to find out, it was my front u-joint on the drive shaft that was going out. I put new ones on myself, front and rear, and the clunk stopped. The u-joint basically had no lubrication what so ever. It fell apart in my hands.

Chech the U-joints and if you have a 2 piece driveshaft I would look at the center slip yoke. I have a 01 and I've had a clunk or clank 1 time and that was in reverse when the temp. was about -10 degrees did it 2-3 times within about 40 feet and never did it again I have Royal Purple 75-140wt in the rearend.
