during this last month of long installs and paint job on my burban, i installed a tranny temp gauge. i noticed on the 1K trip to florida i made with it that the tranny temp was right at the end of the green, about 330-235 degrees. i is REAL close to the "red zone"

i did not tap the tranny pan, there was a spot right above it with a blank that i removed and installed the sensor. it was located on the drivers side about in the middle.

is this normal to run this high?

is it reading this b/c of the location of the sensor? (not being in the pan i mean?)

was it 330 or 235 ?

MrTailLight

that would be my bad! it was 230-235 degrees w/o pulling a trailor

HUm it would seem to me those temps would be about normal in the middle of the Transmission,(not in the pan after cooling), the cooler working in the rad. shold only get it down to ehgine temps. If you want it cooler you might look at what TD did for an tranny cooler setup.
OOPS it might be HoweE that I was referring to. Sorry HoweE

I run a remote fan driven trans oil cooler set at 165 degrees installed in the output line from the trans and have removed the trans lines from the radiator an directed it directly to the factory cooler mounted forward of the radiator. This set up with a Torq Loc holdsmy trans temperature, senced at the same location you are using, at 150 to 155 while towing. When the Torq Loc is unlocked the temperature will go up to 180

Tranny temp at 230 -250degrees in Florida , 65mph, 100Deg 3K T/C.
I considered this to be to high for Transmission :

Clean the Cooler and behind it: " see privious post " HowieE " link,
good info on cleaning.
Cleaned Cooler : droped temps 20 degrees, 230 Max.
Added : Deep Alu Pan, Droped temps about 30 Degrees.,

I rarely run over 200 degrees now, tran temps lower than oil temps all
operating ranges : EXCEPT: when running a hill with Torque Converter unlocked.

ADDED: TCC " Poor mans lock up sw. Downshift to 3rd ( as required, lock up TCC, and pull hill, temps usually stay below 180 Degrees.

NOTE: If you are Towing or pulling heavy, at high speeds, it will not take
much throttle to unlock the TCC.
this will REALLY raise temps in transmission.

HowieE,

How did you change the lines around and bypass the radiator, very interested in doing that. IMO the radiator doesn't do much when you have an external cooler.

thanks

Just remove the lines from the radiator, bend them out of the way to a point you can Loop them togeather with hose and clamp the hose in place. Just remember if you ever replace te lines when you sell the truck you will have to flush out the cooler in the radiator unless you have put corks in the holes you left in the radiator.
In the past when I have done this to my older truck and tow cars I would cover the any Aux. cooler I had installed in the winter to get a little temperature in trans in the dead of winter. It's just too had to get to the factory cooler now to do this and I run a trans at about 100 degrees when it id below 10 degrees outside.
If you do install any type of aux. cooler and disconnect the radiator you will soon notice that the trans temperature, when not towing and on level ground, will be no higher than the air coming back off the engine. winter muck lower and summer about 150 degrees.

that sounds like a good possible solution. i like the idea of the deeper tranny pan. i will be looking for one now! any one know where to start looking for one?

JEGS or SUMMIT Catalog, also on line, Prices are a little cheaper than speed shops, Both good to deal with. Any Returns, no questions asked.

If the temp is taken from the exit of the trany the temp can go as high as 260.This is the temp I get when pulling a big hill and this is in the winter.I almost never see a running temp of 150?Under normal flat driving I see 200 to 220.

i looked alot closer and i do not have an additional tranny cooler. looks like i am heading back to florida again in a few weeks with a loaded trailor, so i will be installing a large tranny cooler behind the grill.

i would LOVE to get an intercooler installed by then!

My probe is in the pan where my drain plug is. I talked to a couple transmission guys (including Larry) and was told that the plug (where I think you put yours) was not the best choice to get a true reading on the temp. The ideal place may be the output line (hot line) from the tranny, but if you don't want to splice into that line, then the pan would probably be the next best choice, since this is where the oil gets taken from to go back up into the transmission.

Mine runs less than 140 on normal driving, not towing. With towing normally in southern Ohio (tandem axle trailer with four 4wd quads and occasionally a slide-in camper) I have seen 200+, but never more than 210. Usually hangs between 160-170. My vehicle speed makes a difference, as well as gear. It runs cooler in OD, than in D. B&M makes a real nice 26,000 lb. stacked plate transmission cooler that I put in my last truck. It's nice size and does a good job - Also an easy install in your Burb. I got mine from Summit. $50-60 insurance policy is the way I see it.

i got to looking on summits web site, and i think i will be going with a deeper pan that adds 3 quarts, part # bmm-70295, and a large "super cooler" as they call it, with a thermostat that kicks a fan on at 160 degrees. part # bmm-70297.

i think with these two add ons it should improve alot as far as being cooler, and giving better protection against over heating

BM pan is good, Comes with longer bolts for thicker flange, Hard to read diagram for screen extender, Tech support easy to call, Rear 2 bolts in kit hard to get in, by tran
mount, i used to original ( little short ) Should buy to bolts with " Allen Key ":
to install easier.

i cant wait to get the goods installed.

MrTailLight did get your Super Tranny Cooler installed and did it make the difference. Debating on whether I need to install on. How difficult was installation. Did you make any modifications to fit it in?

I like the deep pan. I think the extra fluid is a big plus.
I like the TCC towing spring on an improved TCC valve. It keeps the TCC locked and that helps build boost in the low rpms. I forgot to speed up for a hill while pulling an empty dump trailer and I was surprised to see 8 psi at 1650 RPM and the engine made a funny put put put but it gained rpm and sounded normal after it hit 2000.

If I could do one more thing, I would put on the improved shift valves. The one thing I still don't like is the soft shifts.

QM if you want the shifts a little firmer you should try a product like this not trying to plug a certain manufacturer or seller this is just the first one i found on line http://www.ssdieselsupply.com/product_75_Diesel_Shift_Enhancer.htmlthis

I'd rather make my own. Is this the same as putting 100 ohm on the TOT signal on a switch?

69camarox
05-03-2005, 10:26 PM
yes the product was just the easiest way to get my point across

this is a variable resistor across the force motor though

The more R on the force motor the firmer the shift?

SRL520,
I installed B&M's super cooler on my last truck ('90 K1500 w/vortec 350/700R4). Very easy installation. The kit I bought came with very good instructions, photos and all the hardware I needed. The only thing I didn't like was their suggestion to put these plastic "zip tie" things through the radiator to hold it in place. I, instead, used the steel brackets they included and modified them to hold the cooler in position. Nice "factory" looking cooler (stacked plate design).

srl520.....HUGE cooling difference. i was running 235-240 even running empty and now it says 170-190 most times. the highest temp i seen was 210. i was in florida heat with a 24' enclosed trailer driving in town. once i got on the highway, it was back to 170-190. i also installed a 9" fan tranny cooler and took the lines out of the rad. this made a difference as far as no more rad temps running my tranny temps.

this cooler has a 160 degree thermostat and i have yeat to see it come on. with the drop pan and this cooler, it added 4.5 qts of fluid. the extra fluid alone helps keep things cool. i am very happy with the purchase!

hey Mr. T, did your year sub. come with a tranny cooler from the factory?

SnowDrift

Mr. Taillight,

Doing much better today. I got my truck back yesterday from the body shop. I hit a deer on the way to work on the Friday before Easter. It took out my hood, grille, DS fender, DS door, DS cab corner also had damage. I'm putting things back on it (flares, bumper, nerf bars, etc.) and it will be back on the road Saturday sometime.

I've been following your posts - looks like your Burban is coming right along!

sorry to hear your rig got hit like that. ive been working hard at this burban! its coming along though.

guybb3, the only tranny cooler it had was the radiator. more like a tranny warmer!

guybb3
05-06-2005, 08:16 AM
Had to ask that one Mr. T because my year came with a decent sized cooler from the factory and if you're tranny was getting that hot with the same setup as mine, it would be panic time for me!!

Mr. Taillight: How can you tell if your fan is working? Mine is underneath the truck batween two crossmembers. I tried a hair drier and ran out of patience before it came on.

to check the fan unplug the electrical connector at the theromastat on the fan and cross over the 2 connectors. (use a wire jumper or something?) make sure your system is turned on so there is power at that point first. if it clicks on, your good to go!
