pulled out of my house this morning and got about a mile oil pressure was right at 70 psi as usual, come to a stop get part way through 3rd gear and i saw the gauge drop to 0 and i shut it off imediatley and coasted to a stop. there was a message in the INFO CENTER saying something along the lines of check engine oil pressure.

fresh oil change by dealer last tuesday when new injectors were put in and no issues since then. not low on oil and not leaking oil anywhere. i check the connection on the sender and it seems good.

i drove the truck the 3/4 mile back to my house and it sounds completely normal and no other symptoms. (this was after looking things over on the side of the road for 40 minutes)

oil pressure sender???

oil pump ??

help...

My first thought was a bad stepper motor-- but that would not cause the info center showing low oil pressure. The oil pressure should be checked with a manual gauge--maybe the relief valve stuck in the oil pump. It may still be a bad sender-- you could try a new one.

There should be a port on the block where the oil filter is screwed on. Sorry that I don't know which one, but if you search for how to connect up a bypass oil filter you should be able to find a pressure port. Could use the one where the oil pressure sender is now, I guess.

As a test, you could just take off the oil filter and crank the engine for 1 second. If there is a huge puddle under the truck, the oil is pumping. I guess you could use a bucket to catch the mess...

Yes that will tell if you are pumping oil, but you still need to check the pressure.

Had the same problem yesterday. My gauge moves just a tick now when I start the truck but stays at 0psi. I am going to try the sensor.

Some of these vehicles have a bad stepper motor in the dash gauges-- a tech II or a manual gauge will confirm if you have a problem.

Ran Tech2 on the truck today. Gauges are fine, cracked the oil filter, so the pump is good,

So I am left with, I will be changing the sending unit tommrow. We will see what happens

Changed sensor with one that I don't know if it is good or not, hopefully it is not becuase it didn't help anything. Cleaned grounds and changed sensor to no luck.

Ordered a new sensor from GM to the tune of $100 sould be in in 5-7 days. We will see waht happens.

edge boxes have been known to interfere with oil pressure signals. some of them will make it read zero, it happened to me and i did the same side of the road thing and sensor change and nothing then i took my edge off to go to the dealer and a couple of starts later it started working. as soon as i put the edge back on zero oil pressure.

I hope you are all correct that it is a sender or something. Because when the oil pressure is 0, it could easily cause the engine to spin a bearing which could total the engine.

So did you swap the sensor?

Did it fix it?

my oil pressure dropped to zero, come to find out the nut that holds the gear on the oil pump backed off. So gear was spinning just not engaging the pump.
The new style pumps have reversed threads,to help fix the problem.

when you unplug the sensor does the dash gauge peg out?
