Do you guys wait for the oil change light, or do you do it sooner? The dealer told me to wait till the light comes on, doing it every 3000 miles is just a waste of money. I personally like to change it every 3-4000 miles. Just thought I would see what everyone else thought:beerchug:

51,000 miles and the oil has been changed six times. RotellaT Synthetic since 10,000. Only time I did not wait for the light was the 5,000 mile change. No problems, I think the oil companies preached 3,000 miles to line their pockets.

I know I've read both sides of this argument, and both have good points that are difficult to argue against. Do what's comfortable for you. I'm going to change mine every 3k because its comfortable for me. I dropped serious coin on this truck, and don't want it to break right after the warranty expires. Changing the oil on a gasser is cheap insurance. Am I wasting $? Maybe, but its my money to waste and my truck to waste it on...

i change mine every 3k. i use regular valvoline so its less than $15 for 6 quarts and an ac delco oil filter. now if i used mobil 1 @ $4/qt or had a diesel and it held 15qts, i might have a different opinion.

my last truck (89 k1500 5.7L) had 215k miles on it when i sold it without a problem. i replaced the rear main seal about 6 months before i sold it and that was the only engine work that was ever done on the truck (besides routine maintenance/tune ups). i changed the oil every 3k miles and it sure kept that engine in good shape. it still had plenty of power and got 13-14 mpg.

FWIW, I changed the oil in my last truck, a '00 2500 Silverado 6.0, only when the change oil light came on, usually at around 7,000 miles. I sold it to my neighbor with 237,000 miles on it, & it used ~1 quart of oil about every 5,000 miles when I sold it. The truck has 250k+ miles on it now, & is still going strong.

I would recommend doing an oil analysis on occasion, though, if you're going to extend your drain intervals. I'd rather spend my money on oil analysis than unneeded oil changes. It helps your resale value also, when you have UOA reports for your truck.

Since this is for the GM Gassers, I'm assuming your inquiring about a gas engine and not a diesel.

For me, I've always changed mine at 3500 miles. It's more of a comfort issue than anything else. On my new truck, I changed the oil at 700 miles and then just did it yesterday at 3000 miles. Next change will be at 6500 - 7000 miles. I use Mobil 1 5w30 due to my temps and cold weather starts and use an AC Delco filter. It hasn't burned a drop of oil (like I've seen others post with the 8.1) and runs fantastic. When I change it at 3000 miles, I pulled a sample to send to the lab...we'll see how it comes back and I'll post.

In my 99 Z-71 OBS 5.7L I changed the oil to Mobil1 10W-40 at 1st oil change and used Mobil1 M1-110 filter exlusively. I changed every 5000 miles and truck now has 117,000 miles on it and runs as strong as it ever did.

I recently bought an 02 HD 6.0L with 28,000 miles. I changed the oil in it to Mobil1 5W-30 but can't find Mobil oil filter, so I am running AC-Delco filter. I plan to change every 5000 miles in it as well.

Where'd you find Mobil1 in a 10W40 weight? I've seen it in 0W40 and 5W40 but not 10W40?

As to what the oil is, look here:

As to where to buy it, Advance Auto has it. Or, just look in the yellow pages for the Mobil Oil jobber in your area. You have to buy it by the case from the jobber, but it gets used up quickly if you drive much.

:) Always run Mobil 1 5W-30 (It starts a lot better at -20F). Changed oil twice a year in my last truck (a F***) which was about 6000 miles on the oil and had no problems in over 135,000 miles - it's still running.

Using Mobil 1 5W30 in my Chevy and I let it go to the oil light last change. Had 6244 miles and 3%. No heavy towing or high temperatures. BTW - it does not use any oil between changes.

I do mine at 3000 for 3 reasons:

1: Florida is hot and where I drive there's a lot of dust so mine falls under "rough service"

2: I'm the head tech at an auto shop and I get free oil changes

3: I don't have to do it, the boss tells the lube guys to "git r done"

P.S. I'm old school as far as oil goes, the basic oil itself almost never wears out, it's the additive packages that do, and it's these additives that do most of the work.

I try to do ours as close to 3,000 miles as possible. Sometimes it goes over when we are traveling. I use Purolater Premium One filters now. I stopped using 10-40 oil when Ford issued their bulletin to not use it unless you want your camshaft to wear out.
