I've got a JD 6410, PTO will engage and start turning, then shuts off and flashes the blue warning light. Replaced the RPM sensor on the PTO thinking that it wasn't reading the revolutions and was turning off the PTO. That didn't fix it and the Switch isn't the problem.
I reversed the PTO shaft to see if the 1000 RPM shaft would work --> same results.
I noticed that neither the "540" or "1000" RPM lights illuminate when the PTO is engaged, do you think it could be the indicator at the end of the shaft that tells the tractor which gears to use on the shaft that is bad?

The county where i live has 4 off the exact same tractors, and i hate to say to much but with 3 off them they needed major repairs in the pto area. Clutches, casting replacment, It wasen't pretty for them only haveing around 3500 hours. I will ask some more about what made them start looking in the rear ends. May not be the same deal.

We had the same problem with out 6400 at around 7000 hrs. Had it to the dealer I don't know how many times. Worked for a few days then the same thing again. Eventually we gave up, and then the dealers service manager quit and started his own thing. He came out to our farm the next week and it took him 25 mins to fix it. He knew exactly what was wrong, but wasn't allowed to fix it. But thats another story.
Check your seat sensor (the wire that goes to the seat and the sensor under it) and the your PTO switch (the lift and twist one) They are known to go and cause that problem as well as the RPM sensor. At least on the 6400 anyway, I doubt the 6410 is much different in that department.

Can you explain on what was wrong that he wasn't allowed to fix??
Do you know anything about the switch that the PTO shaft itself pushes in to switch from 540RPM to 1000RPM?

Its a pin that pushes in and switches it into high gear. I will look to see if I can find a diagram. We had ours go on our 6400, it got to the point where the pin wouldn't go in, something broke. I don't know exactly, becuase I was in the US all that summer, and never seen it apart. I will look for the diagrams when I'm at the arm this weekend.
He wasn't allowed to fix it becuase the owner of the dealership woundn't let him. They were very crooked for a time, they would fix something so it would work for a while, and then it would break and end up back in the shop. They would clean up old parts and put them in boxes and resell them. It was a shitty deal, and there were a lot of ppl mad, and they lost a few good staff. They seem to have smartened up, but I still won't take anything that is in an open box.

one more thing to check is the solenoid for the PTO. My 6300 did exactly the same thing and ended up being a weak solenoid. To test you can swap the solenoids from the rear locking diff to see if it takes care of the problem. (they are the same)

It was the PTO Selenoid. Frustrating thing is I called the closest dealer authorized to work on this tractor and they tech told me that it did not have a PTO Selenoid. So then I try finding other things.
Most local dealer lost the ability to service this size tractor b/c no market in the area, but they had a service manual that we borrowed that allowed us to read the error codes and diagnose the problem. Sucks to be shut down for 4 days for a $58 selenoid.
Is it possible to get copies of service manuals for JD tractors?

They are available at JD dealers, or at least they used to be. Kind of pricey but the payback is quick.
