Summers coming and my only complaint w/ my van is the clutch fan coming on when sitting in traffic . It doesn't overheat , but the fan sucks up a ton of pedal . Any succesful mods ? Suggestions for an electric fan that fits ? I hate the clutch ! We have a ton of construction going on and I anticipate long delays , the clutch will annoy the hell outa me , also the warming of the a.c. .

Have you removed the rubber flapper that seals between the hood and radiator support ? It is not a huge improvement but helps a little bit. I have thought about the electric fan set-up also but I am not sure I want to be the guniea pig for all of you. How about those additives that are suppose to help with cooling ? Anybody try that yet ?

I haven't removed it (rubber gasket) , it might help . I wonder why it is there in the first place , the General usually doesn't waste a cent . Judging by the amount of crap the air filter gets full of I thought it might keep water off the electronics and debris from the intake etc. . I also wonder why they restrict the intake , thought about cutting a hole in the shroud to free up some air to the intake . I believe Joey already has , but haven't seen any pics.

What kind of ambient air temps are you having when your fan kicks in ?

Low 90s , but not while moving , stuck in traffic :banghead: I'm betting you don't see that much traffic in Montana.

I once saw 4 cars during a 250 mile one way trip. The road rage was building I tell ya.
I talked to somebody today that claimed Royal Purple Ice coolant additive dropped his temps by 10 degrees. I might try it. It is only like $10-12 for a bottle.

We had the hottest day of the year so far today and I can't say I even noticed the fan. A/C on max high and it sat running for 15 minutes to cool off.
Do you guys hear the fan all the time? I have the gasket in place and a hole cut through the cover in front of the air intake so air comes up from the grill. I will do some pics of it to show you guys

Were you towing ? The fan doesn't stay on long when you start moving .Temps in the 90s ? Tow haul ? My guess is you have to have the right conditions to bring it on .

To be honest I do not even know if mine has ever came on. But then again I cannot remember what I did 15 minutes ago. My Dad has had his come on, but he was pushing it when it was in the 90 and towing.

you'd know if it came on. when the fan clutch gets hot enough, the clutch locks up and you get full speed of the fan which makes a lot of noise. usually it disengages after you start moving and get enough airflow to cool the clutch so that it disengages and slowes down.

I know how much it roars, I have been in Dads van when it has happened. I usually have more important things on my mind than to worry if my fan kicks in or not.

Also I forgot about something else to help with cooling. Underneath the van bolted to the cross member is a piece of plastic that blocks air from flowing over the cross member and below the pan. The lower radiator hose is right there also. I put it on for Winter but off for Summer. With it off you get air blowing across the hose and pan. Helps for a couple of degrees.

Thanks for the tips .

I just thought of something else that has helped. With the new bumper I now have a 1" gap between it and the grill. The stock bumper was right up against the grill. So I now have 1" x 36" of extra air blowing across radiator.

Yesterday I was in the big city all day doing work. Temps were high 80 to low 90. My coolant temp never hit 200 degrees. What would you guys have for temps ?

I have yet to see over 194 on the insight.

I have the same very loud clutch, but it is over 100 here and my temp shows almost 210 on my dash guage. I would love some guidance to keep my D max cooler. I am new here but i do tow but mostly use if for work with about 900 pounds of stuff in and on my van.
