hi
i'm a newbie here and to diesels.
i,ve tried searching prev posts but nothing that points at injectors.

justed purchased 92 gmc 3500 2wd,6.5 td 83k miles

when you start truck cold, shakes for 30 seconds like its missing and smokes.
after minute shaking stops and motor smooths out, smoke subsides.
till you give it fuel...starts smoking again and shaking like it's flooded and then smooths out.

let truck warm up,take for cruise around block and truck smokes on accel till your at cruise . floor it and smoke come back at decell.

take truck out on highway for a couple miles and all is well for the rest of the day ,regardless if you let sit for 4-5 hours.
no more smoke till you let truck sit overnight and do the same thing the next morning.
smoke is white/gray and strong unburnt fuel smell.

was told that i have a leaky injector and that these trucks only get 80k miles to a set of injecters.
is this true or are they trying to lighten my pocket at 400 for a set?

is there any other things to look for that would cause this ?
the leaking injector theory sounds right but don't have the cash to just start throwing money out.

thanks ahead of time for your input!

Try running a strong dose of injector cleaner in your fuel. I have had some good luck with marvel mystery oil for freeing up sticky injectors. Check obvious things, put in new fuel filter, check air filter. If these don't help, see if you can have someone put a timing meter on your engine to check the injection timing.;)

filters were recently replaced.
when you say use marvel mystery oil i assume you mean adding it to fuel tank.
how much do you put in a tankful and how long does it take b4 you see an affect?

also is what i was told about injectors only lasting 80k miles on this truck true or bs?
as far as injector replacement..i see new and rebuilts for the same price. am i better off trying to find new or are rebuilt ones better than the original 80k lifespan these got?
again thanks for the input.

Read the label as to recommendations for fuel treatment and you could make the dose slightly stronger. 80,000 miles for injectors, not it my experience. More like 150,000 to 200,000 and then they are usually still OK. A little more info, how is your fuel economy? Usually an injection pump going bad will affect fuel economy and smoke. I would try advancing the injection timing first and see if it helps. Also have you checked your glow plugs?

If it is the injectors, these guys do a good job of rebuilding injectors. http://coastfuelinjection.com/body_index.cfm
They are just over the hill from you.
You might also try using Diesel Kleen first to clean up the fuel system. From Wal Mart or most truck stops.
From: http://www.powerservice.com/dieselkleen_cetane.asp
Cleans dirty fuel injectors - exceeds Cummins L10 Injector Depositing Test Superior specifications
Decreases fuel consumption up to 8 percent - fuel savings exceed cost of additive
Reduces piston and combustion chamber deposits - reduces soot blow-by and engine oil thickening
