The GM8 has been the factory turbo since mid 95 I think. It is a perfect turbo for all around performance.

i was thinking that this turbo was off a duramax, is thats possible, if its the same then why do dmaxs make so much more boost

If that is a GM-8, it was the last upgrade to the 6.5, standard since '98.
Ain't many miles on that one, but you should look before you leap - either\both blades could be all trashed.

No, DMaxes use a completely different turbo. The GM8 is fine on the 6.5, and will handle about as much boost as you want to put on a 6.5.
If you really want to have fun, get a PowerStroke turbo.
I can tell without looking that there is nothing the 6.5 has in common with the duramax, except fuel type.

Here is a not very good picture of a duramax turbo.

I went from a GM-4 to a GM-8 thinking there would be a lot more performance - I was disppointed. IMHO the GM-4 had more more power at take off but lack the passing power at higher speeds. The GM-8 was just the reverse.

does anyone know the exact difference between the GM-8 and the earlier turbos? Always wonder about that.

GM-5 was much improved over -4 and earlier, for intake and exhaust flow.
Exh elbow, turbine housing, cartridge-compressor flange and housing redesigned, with no backward compatibility.
GM-8 is identical to -5, but with longer WG shaft and bushing, correcting for early bushing failure in -5.
-8 exhaust elbow on -5 makes a -8.
