: Towing with a lifted truck
Loader 05-27-2008, 01:42 AM Many people told me it wouldn't work - that the truck would be too tall. Well, it wasn't and it tows just fine with a RANCHO 4-inch lift. It only raised it 2 inches in the rear. Here's a shot:

Tundy 06-03-2008, 01:14 AM Good topic. I was wondering the same thing but I'm looking for a 6 or 8 inch lift pulling a 39ft 5er.
Can this be done?
What's the maximum bed height to recieve the standard 5th wheel pin?
fast80mc 06-03-2008, 01:48 AM Some of the height depends on the trailer. My buddy lifted his truck 4 inches sorry not sure about tire size. Anyway he was looking campers and some would work and some would not. He bought one and had to have the axles flipped to level out the camper. He was told you need a minimum of 6 inches between the top of the bedrails and the underneth of the camper. I hope this helps. I think i have 5 inches of space and have rubbed it lightly twice. I have seen a truck with at least 35's pulling a lifted fith wheel.

Exactly why I kept the stock 245 tires. I run the 245's while towing and have my H2's and 315's for daily driving. I've never measured my gap, but it's much worse than stock because my bed cover has rails that stick up above the bed rails! I have yet to hit them, but I've been close!
I inquired about lifting the trailer. The Montana dealer told me not to lift at all and that with the Moryde suspension things can't be modified. With a 4 inch lift, it only raised the rear about 2 inches.

That's a question I was never able to get an answer to and I suspect it's because there is no one answer. All I was told is that some of the Dodge dually trucks were difficult to work with due to height. I've learned that different trailers have different needs and all the different pin boxes are yet another variable.
A 6 inch lift is probably going to go up 4 inches in the rear. That's assuming you run 245's. If you plan to run larger tires, remember to add half of the tire height increase to your lift amount. So, if you go from 31's to 33's and lift 6 inches in the front and 4 inches in the rear, then you'll raise the front by 7 inches and the rear by5 inches.
A 39-foot model will probably measure about 43 feet overall. With that kind of length, you won't see too much or a rake increase - especially if you don't have air springs and you let the rear of the truck sag under the trailer weight. Mine will drop almost 2 inches and I raise it back level with the air springs.
Best thing to do is level the trailer, measure to the pin box, then crank up the front jacks until the pin box is 4 inches higher and you'll see what you're rake will be like because if it was set by the dealer, they adjusted things to be as close to level as possible with your truck as it was.
Waggie 06-03-2008, 11:57 PM i have a 6 inch lift and 35' and i tow a 28ft 5'er around without any issues. The dealer had flip the axles on the trailer. It rides like it was meant to be too! Hardly any squat on the truck and the trailer weighs about 10000 lbs with about a 6-700 pin weight

Yeah, see, you're lucky there. I looked for trailers that could be modified like that, but couldn't use it as the deciding factor. My father's HRambler has additional mounting holes in the spring perches to raise or lower the trailer. Mine doesn't have that and the axles are straight (flipping them would accomplish nothing).
So, I'll just remain as one of the few that paid the same price for a 6 inch lift and only got 4!

Actually, the axles being straight is not a factor. Flipping the axles, is just putting the axles UNDER the spring pack instead of over the pack. It will give you the height of the axle diameter+springpack.
You can also add 2-3 inches by cutting off the spring hangers and welding in a 2-3 inch spacer between the hangers and the frame. I did this to my 40' camper when I went to 22.5 wheels with 40" tires on the truck. Now, it is all nice and level.

I have the Moryde system so there aren't conventional springs and hangers. My dealer told me it can't be lifted, but I recently saw mention of spacers for the Moryde...
...maybe I could've gone 6 inches after all!
my o my 06-05-2008, 06:17 PM I have a 2007.5 with a 6" lift, 35" tires and pull a 35' Weekend Warrior with flipped axles. Tows great, with air bags ofcourse. I have about 6.5" of bedrail to trailer clearance...
Loader 06-06-2008, 09:53 AM I had to go check to be sure. My axles are already under the springs, so there is no flipping that can be done. The only thing I can see is maybe lowering the spring perch by 4 inches and flipping the shackles on the Moryde pivot if more height were needed.
I think I'll stick with my setup - 4 inch RANCHO on the truck and leave the trailer alone!
Playhorse 06-16-2008, 02:07 AM To tack onto this discussion do most of you guys have to replace or remove the OEM tailgate when hooking a 5th to a lifted truck ?
my o my 06-16-2008, 01:35 PM Neither for me. I put the tailgate down when I hook and unhook then close it while I am towing.

apologies, but i thought a 5er was supposed to have ~20% pin weight? 700lb is 7% - isn't that awful low?
ahm

Got any pics?
teamg 07-12-2008, 04:52 PM Thanks for the picture My O My. Seems there are a lot of folks (me included) that want to see pics of lifted trucks with 5ers. I too am shopping for a fifth wheel, and I would just like to see photos. Not to hijack the thread, but maybe folks could post a thread with some good pics showing off their fabrication skills & lifted 5ers. Thanks for the great info!
teamg 07-12-2008, 05:07 PM It took a few minutes, but I found a thread with lots of lifted 5er pics. Sorry to hijack this thread.
