I need a new truck to tow with. I get diesel free, so it has to be one. I'm looking for the cheapest alternative. In the trader was a deal for $2k for a 90 6.2l 2500 ext cab 4x4. I'm looking to tow a car trailer with mostly small weight cars. 4000lb tops. Will I have trouble with the 6.2l? The guy said it is non-turbo. What kinda power rating did these get? and what kinda legwork can I do to improve power? I wouldn't mind sinking in some cash later on to give it more power. Its got 210k miles on it. is there anything I should worry about? the truck is clean, and as cheap as the gas ones for sale. Any opinions or comments would be appreciated.

Since you already know you want to do regular towing, I would hold out for a '92-'93 Turbo 6.5L with a mechanical pump instead of settling for an old 6.2.

TGD has a good thought. I have an old '82 6.2 that I tow a tandem axle implement trailer, rated for 5000# load. I haul my '68 Firebird drag race (bracket car, 2800#) The total weight of car and trailer is around 4800#. Truck is 6200#. It's ok on most roads but when it hits the hills, I just have to slow down and use 2nd gear and let the traffic go by. I don't tow up many hills, so it's not an issue but if I did, I would want something with more power. The long tows I've made have been an exercise in patience.

The up-side is, the Firebird is dependable, consistent and the driver (my daughter) wins rounds!!

Power is addictive you will be happy with mpg of the 6.2 but be disappointed in the grunt it can deliver then want a Banks turbo kit, might as well start with a 6.5 turbo and be done with it, plenty of grunt hidden in that engine, the factory made it anemic, but it has more room to grow than a 6.2 will give you.
