I have owned:
1980 Pontiac Bonneville 5.7L Diesel
1995 Mercury Cougar 4.6L V8 (Still Have)
1997 Chevy Silverado Ext Cab 4x4 454
2004 Chevy Silverado CC LB D-Max

I am NOT a Ford fan, however, I do like my Cougar, and I have to say it has NEVER failed to start, died, or left me stranded... I DO like the OHC engine in my Cougar better then the 454 that was in my 97 Chevy. IMO, the OHC engines sound healthier at high RPM's.

Had all three Diesel trucks. ---> Talking all stock here.......IMHO the 5.9 is the best engine, bar none. I'm talking pulling over 300,000 miles. It's strange but the 7.3 is a really good motor as well. The HP and TQ numbers really don't impress on paper..but the frick'n things pull! ......... Now the Duramax..... well, she's a screamer around 65 to 70, drops in 4th a lot, but it pulls really well. I don't get the fuel economy out of the Max like the other two. ....... Now the transmissions...oh boy..... Nothing that I've had can touch the Allison. The Dodge had the Getrag 5 speed and the Ford the 4R100. The Dodge would eat the speedometer every 4k miles or so, pressure switch, and the Ford tried many times to burn the tranny right out of it. The Allison........ well, I have not had a lick of problem out of it and it's had more 'abuse' than any of them.

Dodge..2WD..... @ 160k the mains leaked - The rotors wer replace @ 104k and 190k - the wires burned up under the hood @ 80k - the trans puked a switch every 4 or 5k - the door hinges were FCensored Ked @ 80k - pump failure @ 4k and @ 110k - Axel seals went to hell around 60k and sometime after 150k - everything related to steering was adjusted/fixed or replaced routinely - radio quit - windows quit - tailgate just fell apart - roof leaked ....... on and on. Yes, I truely hated that thing. However, even with the low rear I got 19.3 MPG unloaded and 14-15 loaded.

Ford..4WD.....Pulled well although looking at the sky and "dancing" in the road got old..quick. - radio puked - rear leaked - trans leaked - truck would get stuck on flat ground(no kidding)- #8 injector had a problem - brakes almost killed me.... I did slightly bomb it. Had about 330+ RWHP and still got 17MPG on Hwy, 9 to 11 pulling. I think the truck could kill you really easy over 110MPH... very unstable after 110MPH.

GMC..4WD...Great truck. It pulled very well, really stable truck. TOO FRICK"N LOW TO THE GROUND WITH LITTLE TIRES! - radio (x2) puked - transfercase issues - Uh.... that's about it. Fuel mileage sucked. I avg. 11 MPG overall. Most comfortable truck I have ever had. Best truck to have for all around duty.

If I could build a truck...... I would have the GMC body wrapped around a Dodge frame with the Dodge axels, Allison transmisson, BW transfer case and reliabilty of the GMC. ............ yeah, not gonna happen.:(

Our buisness has had the big three diesels.

Dodge-94 3/4 ton w/auto tranny:motor is great tranny is junk.96 1ton dually w/5 speed:no complaints, it does not have the power of the newer diesels but it is a runner. Dodge bodies are not up to the task of what we put them through, but they are both still in service.2004 dodge 3/4 ton w/hemi: all i can say is it is all show....pooch
Ford-2000 3/4 ton w/ auto:strong puller but has some issues. It is really more like a heavy half ton if you ask me. Low end torque is lacking.
1977 Chevy 3/4 ton: great truck full time 4x4 350 w/400 trans. It's old but it still keeps up w/ the HEMI. 2000 Chevy 2500 w/6.0L: another glorified half ton, very disappointing.2004 Chevy 2500HD LB7: by far the most abused and by far the most reliable. You can't put a heavy enough load on it and behind it to keep traction. Love it.2005 Chevy 2500hd LLY:Has only 2000 miles on it so it has yet to prove itself. Nice quiet truck w/ plenty of power. Seems like it lacks get up and go in the big gear (5th). from 65 to 90 the LB7 can take it.
That is my personal opinoin on the big three. Like I said all of these trucks are still in service, and run hard daily pulling WAY over what they are rated for.
26000 trailers are not uncommon here.
They all have their strong and weak points.Of course I am a Chevy fan so the 2004 duramax is my baby.
