If you were buying a small tractor, say under 100 horse what kind would you buy?

What do you plan on using it for? Will this be farming, estate, commercial work, hobby stuff?

What sort of budget do you have?

Partial to John Deere myself. There are a lot of tractors under 100 HP. On John Deere's website there is task analyzer that helps you make a selection.

The under 100 horse is the largest market for tractors. There are many, many choices to choose from. You need to figure out how much money you want to spend, what options you can't live without, and the ones that would be nice but not a deal breaker. Do you want new, or used? What is the intended purpose. Is resale value important to you, and things like that. I am currently looking at a 30 to 35 hwp range to do small tasks with at my farm and around the house.

Good Luck.

Def depends on what it's use will be. My grandad has an 48hp New Holland that I really like a lot but my only complaint is that it is tall and narrow. The thing makes me nervous when I take it on the roads at the hunting camp but it works great for him since all he does is plow a flat open field, use the boom for moving stuff around, and use the finishing mower for cutting the grass. Now my dad has an old International (I think 42hp) with a front end loader. It is much wider and shorter but the front end loader on it is awesome which was the whole reason he bought it. My uncle had a 70 or 75hp Ford tractor which I loved (especially when trying to put down 25-30 acres of food plots) but it seemed like we worked on the damn thing all the time.
Anyway, that is my take on my very limited knowledge of tractors. Basically, you buy them based on need/use.

I've spent a lot of time running a Case 5220 MFWD loader doing all kinds of work. Really like the left hand reverser, makes for really efficient loader work and backing up to wagons etc. I believe that these were rated about 80hp, ours was better all around than the the other 5240 we had which was rated higher. The turbo makes a huge difference and I prefer the 4x4 transmission over the power shift.

My choice would be a ford or a new holland thats all we ever use we bought a jd 2755 about 2 months ago and was really a nice tractor good and strong but it didnt end up staying but 2 weeks cause we wanted another new holland. What I'm trying to say is that the new holland ford, john deere, kubota and so on are all good tractors its just a matter of what you like yourself as for me there is nothing wrong with the other tractors i just wont own another one that aint blue...

Then again if you are looking at price also.....look in your Northern tool cataloge. They sell a 82 Hp for $29,500, and a 60Hp for $24,000. Both of these tractors come with loaders, cab, heat,AIR,and the same PERKINS diesel engine as Massey Ferguson.Best of all they are NEW with 1 year warranty and DELIVERED to your house !! OH, I forgot to mention they are both 4-WHEEL DRIVE.Yes they are an import tractor but the comparable John Deere in this size will cost you $100,000. And by the way even John Deere's small tractors are made by Yanmar !!

The 2 top choices are JD and Kubota.

New Holland is a touch behind them.

Kioti and Mahindra are next.

The choices for used machines are also very large!

John Deere. Restored 4020's are real nice but if you want newer 4055's are around 100hp,6410's are around 100hp,7210's are in that 100hp range.
It's all in what you want. personally I'd go fro a late 80's to early 90's 4055. We have a 2000 6410 and it's got a lot of electronics.

the engine may be good but the rest of the machine is junk. there was a story i think in farm show where a guy had one and picked something up with the loader and the trans broke off engine and almost killed him.

John Deere may run some Yanmar engines in there tractors, but John Deere builds there own tractors. Even the small 2000 30 series.

JD used yanmar engines for a long time, Im pretty sure yanmar was the basic small diesel engine used in everything before the cheaper kubota came out.

I thought the small jds were all yanmar but jd had there body for them.
