I work at a large pump company......we built this pump that is going to be a emergency cooling water pump for a refinery in the far east somewhere.....anyway......in the feild it will be diesel driven.....we test all our pumps with electric motors just cause its a lot easier......

This customer wanted the see the whole unit run together as it would in the field....so in comes the CAT 3508 V-8. 34 liters and 12,000 lbs of serious grunt.

Fired her up and ran pumping 12000 gallons of water a minute for 2 hours.

The pump only required about 550 hp......I think the application engineers kinda overkilled this job.

Listening to that beast idle with no muffler inside the plant.......that was an experience........

You wouldn't want to feed it......35 gallons of fuel an hour under load........hehehehehehehe......http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/grd.gif .....I wasn't right for the rest of the day!

I helped the CAT guy drain the coolant and oil......a full 55 gallon drum for each......the tech was cool....we swapped diesel knowledge for an hour after the test....

I actually liked my job that day.....

do you guys use turbine powered pumps? I used to work for a place that used turbines for pumps and generaters, cats were the only big engines used for large hp,then we used turbines, mostly on deisel, some on cng-big motors are cool...btw that is a medium size cat-have you seen the V16?I think Its a 3500 series15 ft tall 20+ft long, rumbles the ground when running, feels like an earth quake-love giant hp-michael

You should see the size of the oil filters that thing takes..all 3 of them....

the biggest diesel i've ever seen working was in a morbark flail chipper. this thing will take a 30" tree and convert it to nothing in seconds. it's got a 12 cyl. Caterpiller engine . 1000hp . makes the ground shake. nuf said.:grd:

Biggest diesel I saw was aboard a Navy ship. 3400 HP, v-16 turbo charged ALCO. Had six, three on each shaft. Had a couple smaller v-12's running the generators.

There are six new V-16 CATs with Quadruple turbos going it at the hospital where my Dad works. They are replacing two V-12 Detroit 2cycles and a few big Cummins.

12 k gals really isn't that much for us......we build pumps that are 13 feet tall and have 48 inch suction flanges......you can stand up inside these things.

A pump that big can draw 2500 HP and pump 125,000 gallons a minute.........we have a half million gallon sump we use to test those bad boys......and we use electric motors......you should see the meter spin when we fire those up....it's a good thing we're not all that far from Niagara Falls........

That 3508 is the same engine they use in the D11. In the Dozer, it has 850 horsepower and uses 35 gallons of fuel an hour at 80% load. Awesome engine

turbine powered water pumps are still used by the canada navy, and the us coast guard,I think, they are ran on diesel, from the primary tank, anyone know of this???turbines, although inefficiant, can produce some serius hp,and gpm....just wondering_michael

The company I work for has a turbine pump division in California. They are huge http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif

We are talking 8 to 9000 horse pumps.......100,000-500,000 gallons a minutehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/drop_mouth.gif
They don't make too many every year.....and I'm sure they are $$http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/RockOn.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/eyecrazy.gif

I'm not sure how they are powered.......big diesels could do it but I gotta think that electric is easier....as long as the local utility can support it

electric moters use alot of kws to start up turbines are already running at high rpms before the load is added, thats why I wonder why????btw the local power co can ussually expect surging,It is a givin, but turbines in there own right are self powered, and much more powerfull than diesel or electric....look up solar turbines, they are a major co whith a host were I Iam from....thats not the fortune 500 co I work for, cause there are several in this county-btw...I love this site-michael

Turbines tend to need gearboxes due to there high rpms. These can be expensive. Also, to be efficient, they generally need to stay at a constant speed.

Michael, what do you mean by "turbines are in there own right self powered"?

biggest engines i've seen are the ones i work on... in the ±10,000 CI range... [12, 16, 20 cylinder emd and 16 cylinder ge's]

Are the GE's just EMD's repackaged? I work for GE, but with Turbines in GE Power Systems.

not really... the all the emd's we have at work are 2 cycles [i've yet to see the new H series 6000hp 4 cycle twin turbo emd's]... all the ge's are 4 cycle... a electronic ge will make full hp with one cylinder down... an electronic emd will not do that..

i've seen a dash 9 ge make full hp in self load testing with a broken conrod and the piston jammed up in the hole shooting fire out the stack...

the car bodies on the loco's are close to the same, but not many [if any] parts are interchangeable

We have a V/16 Detroit two rooms over from my office at work (about 50') with twin air starters, when that sucker starts it scares the bejesus out of me.
Its from nothing to full governed rpm in about 2 seconds,a 16 cyl Detroit w/4 turbos makes some serious power and noise.
All our diesels have tank heaters on them heated to around 160-170*so when these things fire they already are warmed up, which is a good thing as they go instantly to full governed speed.
The hospital where I work has enough emergency generators, Detroit's , Cats, and an old Waukesha to power a small city, at last count I believe we have 12 generators, Of course with 3.5 million square feet we need a few.
We have enough diesel fuel in tanks around the hospital to run my car and truck into the next century and beyond.

big sportfishing boats will burn a 100gph at wot

i guess if you can afford a million dollar boat, you can afford the 3 grand to fill them up.
