: 6.0 exhaust

I'm in the market for a cat back system for my 6.0 to improve power and possibly fuel economy a little. I'm not looking for something super loud, maybe just slightly more presence than stock. I will be getting a Westers tune done up after this install as well. I also want to consider that I would like to do headers and (maybe) high-flow cats in the future and I don't want the exhaust I install now to limit my options later.

What is everyone else running on their 6.0s? Is this a driveway job, or something I should have shop do?

I've seen this done before.

Using simple turbo mufflers or Flowmasters.

Hey, that's cool! I'm looking for a single side exit, though. Should have mentioned that.

This WOULD be a single side exit.....using your OEM tailpipe. Basically all you do with this mod is cut out your OEM muffler, and weld in two mufflers of your choice.

Here is a pic of the rear of your OEM muffler.

I went with the Power Turbine Exhaust System.

Hey :exactly:

I'll jack up the rear axle, start the truck, put it in drive, and send YOU under there with a can of spray paint. :badidea:

There are lots of little things I need to do like that to the truck yet. Way too sloppy and cold to be doing them this time of year though.

One of the first things I did when I got my truck home (bought it used) was crawl under it with 2 bottles of Simple Green and soaked everything under it frame/axles/springs/tranny/oilpan/front suspension/bottom of cab & bed/inside bedside/etc... Let it soak for about an hour and then went back under it with a water hose and washed it out. I got REALLY filthy and wet but it had to be done. Gave it a day or two to dry and then went under with a few rattle cans of semi-gloss and painted rear axle/driveshaft and stuff. Looks MUCH better.

Back on topic - will aftermarket mufflers really help the 6.0 that much? They seem to have a pretty free-flowing exhaust with the dual 3" pipes.

I agree. Unless you want look of dual exit pipes, I can only see a benefit of getting an aftermarket muffler to potentially free up a little backpressure and get a more agressive/deeper sound. I think that's the route I'm going (replace the muffler only & add a polished tip) until later when I can afford a nice dual set up.

Haha...I get it now. That would be a pretty nice solution. I'm still skeptical whether an aftermarket would be that much more free-flowing than the stock to make a difference. From what I hear the stocker is pretty good by itself.

The stocker isn't a true dual exit. The one pipe is closed off inside the muffler!

While it seems much more free-flowing than the C/K years, I'm sure it isn't all that free inside. Afterall, it is pretty quiet for an almost true dual 3" system.

The more I read, the more I'm thinking about just a muffler upgrade for now and a dual upgrade later.

My Stock rumbles plenty loud for me. If it aint broke don't fix it....when mine goes bad I'll look at something else.

With the Magnaflow CatBack it made 10-13rwhp gain throughout the entire powerband. Also, each successive dyno pull, netted higher gains, not exactly sure why though.
The 10-13rwhp figure was the most conservative gain after 7 post install dyno pulls.
There is also a noticable SOTP difference, which is an added bonus

So, thats dual 3" in.

And single ?" out?

Do you have part numbers?

How about sound?

Any drone?

Is it SS?

Here was my write up a while ago:

I've had a magnaflow cat-back system installed on my 2500HD for a couple of weeks now. It replaced the stock system which was a dual 3" inlet, daul 3" outlet HD Muffler, into an external Y, then into an approx. 3.75" diameter, side exit, tail section. (FYI, the HD muffler is for sale if anyone is interested, only has 1,500 miles on it) The stock system was replaced with a Magnaflow daul 3" inlet, internal Y, and a single 4" outlet muffler http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/parts/14594.jpg into a 4" side exiting tail section.
First, let me say, the Magnaflow system removed considerable weight from the truck, which for me, is a good thing :eyes: The quality of the Magnaflow system is excellent. The muffler and exhaust tip are polished stainless steel (beautiful), with the remainder of the tubing being mandrel bent raw stainless steel, or not polished.
The system was installed by Magnaflow themselves. I can not say enough good things about their facility and employees. The shop was impressive, to say the least, with lots of eye candy to keep you busy and entertained
Brandin (Qwik03) was the guy I mostly dealt with, although I had the pleasure of metting Mario as well :jest: .........not. Anyway, after my recent "nightmare stereo install" I am/was extremely nervous and cautious about anyone, other than myself, operating my truck. I'm happy to report, my truck was handled with great care and respect :thumb: Thanks Brandin, I sure appreciate that!

Now for the meat and potatoes. My truck is totally stock, no HP mods what-so-ever, and it made 10-13rwhp gain throughout the entire powerband. Also, each successive dyno pull, netted higher gains, not exactly sure why though.
The 10-13rwhp figure was the most conservative gain after 7 post install dyno pulls.
There is also a noticable SOTP difference, which is an added bonus :drive:

Noise: wait, that's not it, more like a mechanical symphony :)
The 22" magnaflow case is a very good compromise between reasonable decibels and great performance!
however, there is some resonance at 1900rpm, although, no where else in the operating rpm range (0-6000rpm). At first I thought this to be a liability, but it's actually quite the opposite. I find myself looking for that magic rpm (1900) just to hear that sound. Since freeway cruising finds me well above that in every situation, except stop-n-go traffic, it is basically a non issue, and is not intrusive at all. It's kinda like a treat, and I know where to find it;)

For anyone considering a Cat-Back System, IMO, give Magnaflow a serious look. I'm certainly enjoying mine, and it makes real HP to boot! :drive:

So, is the 4" polished tip tailpipe included in the "package"? Or are they both seperate part numbers?

It's about time someone came up with something like this! There are TONS of trucks out there with the 6.0/8.1 and no one else makes an easy "cat-back" system that uses a single exit larger than 3".

Around 1900 is where the stock system drones a bit too. I wonder if a crossover pipe just after the cats would kill the drone any?

how much did you pay for that system? looks good!

On Magnaflows website, they go for $595-620.

But, again, they don't list an application for my truck.

They only list 6.0 with EC/LB or CC/SB

I have a REGULAR CAB pick-up truck.

Which one should I order? Wouldn't the muffler back be the same on all pickups?

I have a similar prob with a crew cab long bed. I found Gibson makes kits for this application. I just don't know anyone with Gibson, and its an expen$ive experiment if it doesn't turn out well.

Aftermarket exhaust does make quite a difference.. I had a shop do a dual 40 series Flowmasters. The downside is, it's quite loud. Cold New England mornings it rattles the windows while warming up, but come the summer, You cant beet it when you drown those import cars with Kazoo mufflers right out.:ro)

I ordered a stock replacement Magnaflow muffler for my wife's Tahoe. Cut the factory one out and put the Magnaflow in. It really woke that 6.0 up. Nice deep rumble when hard in the trottle but very quiet in the truck. Only about $70 plus install.
