I have a 2002 DMax with 74,000 mi.(all higway) and of course it just went out of warranty 2 months ago. My AC Delco batteries were part of a bad batch and both batteries, wiring harness and connections were replaced free of charge last week. I drove home from the dealer and 2 days later, after driving 3 or 4 times locally, it wouldn't start. The horrible noise was a bad starter. When replacing the starter the mech. noticed that several teeth were broken off the flywheel. Now I have to replace the flywheel too!

Has anyone else had this problem? The mech. at the dealer said it is very rare to even have to replace a starter on this truck much less a flywheel too. I can't understand why right after the warrenty ends this had to happen(meaning so young). Also, both the starter and flywheel have to be direct ordered and shipped from Izusu (Japan) and it takes 7 - 10 days. (I called every chevy dealer in florida and no one had 1 starter much less a flywheel because they just don't ever replace them. What does anyone think??

Thanks for your imput!

Matt

That sounds rare. You can get a starter on ebay for 125.00 for new with two year warranty. Flexplate I am unsure off..

No one has even spoke of the 5/100 - I'll ask the dealer tomorrow. Thanks for reminding me...

I checked this morning, both flywheel and starter are warranty code D, which is the 5/100 with 100.00 deductable

Thanks for checking - I have informed the service rep - and he said the starter is not covered and he doubts the flywheel is. So I will now have to call his supervisor and ask him what the problem is...

Thanks for the info...

Labor op code is J4640 for the starter, which is code D
I am guessing you have an allison? If so labor op code for flexplate (flywheel) J1400, also code D
If you have a manual trans J1420 is the labor op and also code D.

Thanks again - I will give him this new info and see what he says - He is still denying the starter...

Not to hijack your thread, but I wonder how many service guys almost sheet themself's when we, the general public, come in with "insider info" like this.

Just want to say THANKS to all the "Tech-Berts" who wisdom and knowledge is greatly appreciated here. I just think of all the bull sheet we would have to go throught.
Thank you!

Trust me - I definitely appreciate any help the "tech heads" can give to this "bone head"! Thanks again!

Did the dealer end up covering this?
