Hi All,

I hope someone can offer some advice on a problem I think I am having. Lately I have noticed a high pitched whining noise when driving the truck. It is not normal turbo or trans noise, I am used to those. This is most noticable when I step on the pedal or when I just let off the pedal (coasting). Any ideas? I think it is getting progressively worse. I usually only notice it when I am accelerating, but noticed it today when coasting. It is high pitched and not really constant. Seems to be related to the throttle. Possible symptom of turbo trouble? Thanks in advance for you help.

Check the clamps and hoses for the turbo and intercooler. Possibly an intake gasket.

Heavy D,

I am having the same noise on my 2001 duramax I listen under the hood and it seems like it is louder on the lower end of engine. I took my belt off and started the truck and the noise does not change, so it cant be any of the accessories. I havent noticed it getting louder as you have mentioned but it stays constant like you said yours does. I think i will just drive it like it is and try not to worry about it. If you find anything let me know and if I do I will do the same.

Thanks Adam

Cobra - Checked all the clamps and hoses (I think, not really sure what I am looking at) and everything seemed ok. There is no obvious impact on performance. I am starting to think I am hearing two different sounds. When I am accelerating it is louder and very high pitched, almost painfully so, and it is not constant. It may be noticeable for a little while or just a second, and seems to come and go. The other thing I am hearing is when I am slowing down. It is also high pitched, but much quieter, barely noticeable.

I am not sure what exactly to look at. The first thing I thought was something with the turbo because it is similar and occurs when acclerating.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I am going to try and take Adam's approach and not worry about it, although it is hard not to sometimes.

I had a 6.5 once, the upper part of the intake gasket had blown out, would only make a whistle while under boost, very high pitched. Might check for stone damage to the intercooler also. The dealer should have a tool for pressurizing the hoses, pipes and intercooler to make sure there are no leaks.
