Does Quaker State even make a CJ-4 oil that the dealer claims he put in my truck which is a LMM engine with smog control

Ask them to show it to you?

Found this on QS website, try address below:

http://www.quakerstate.com/pds/UniversalHDX.pdf

Looks like their Universal HDX is a 15w-40 engine oil, but their own product data sheets say that it meets API CI-4 plus as the highest standard listed. If a dealer service dept is putting an non CJ-4 oil in your LMM, I would raise holy #$%% to make a point. This may be outdated info on the QS website, but I agree with JMJNet, make them show you the bottle with CJ-4 on it.

Makes you wonder some times if some of these dealerships even know the purpose behind the CJ-4 oils??

I'd make the dealer come up with postive proof in writing and/or show the the containers.

I don't think QS has a CJ-4 oil yet. QS is part of the Shell/Penzoil/QS brand line, but they don't share all products across the board.

It seems as though the dealer screwed up. It won't kill you engine, but it might effect the DPF and other exhaust equipment. I'd document this in case you have problems down the road, too.

They finally told me they put the CI-4 in the motor claimed not to know about different oil. Wasn't getting any where with dealer, called GMC they are trying to get answer out of dealer.

RIDICULOUS!!!!!! Do the service depts not even know the basic info contained in the truck's owner's manual. Like I said above, I would raise holy hell on this issue to make a point and hopefully, if you decide to continue going to that dealership, you will have little to no future problems. I agree with post above, probably won't hurt anything, but they should change it out for you ASAP and I make sure that your truck's service record stored on the GM database by your VIN references the date and the dealership that did this, what they did etc. I would also ask for extended warranty on the emissions equipment if it is not already covered by the 5yr/100kmi warranty. As DNew... stated, the engine is probably fine and is covered by 5/100k, the emission equip may also be affected and I am not sure that it fits under the "powertrain" description that the 5/100k warranty covers.

Even though it is likely not a problem, I would make a big deal out of this to them and GM customer service. There is absolutely no excuse for some ignorant Gomer Pyle of a service tech to install the wrong grade of oil. Then for the dept, I assume you spoke with a manager of some sort, to claim they don't know what is basic info in the truck's manual is even worse. Total idiots.

Sorry and good luck.

When I bought my 2006, it was low on tranny fluid. I knew about DEX VI. DEX VI was specifically stated in the manual.

When I went the the GM parts counter, they tried to sell me DEX III; I declined. They thought I was mistaken, and even got a bit grumpy when I insisted about DEX VI. I even walked out and got the manual from my truck, and the parts guy said "that's just a typo". So, I went over to the service dept and asked what they fill all the "new" cars with when they service cars and trucks. "That drum over there ..." , referencing a drum of what was clearly marked as DEX III(h) fluid. In 2006, GM was switching everthing over at the factories to DEX VI. This was November of 2006 when I bought my truck, and it was December of '06 when I was in the dealership for tranny fluid.

Made up my mind to NEVER go them them for service. The parts dept had to order the DEX VI in. They first had to look it up; didn't even know what the part number was or WHAT it was.

If you suspect your dealer is not up to speed, IT'S LIKELY TRUE; THEY AREN'T!

The CI-4 oil won't hurt the Dmax in the slighest. It might, as I stated earlier, mess with the DPF or other exhaust equipemnt. I'd just get them to change oil again for free with the proper fluid, or give a credit for the amount PLUS extra effort to change it yourself for their mistake. Perhaps they could "throw in" a couple free filters for the grief?

I have an independent mechanics for all my car. Not the dealer. I have been going to him for more than 10 years. I usually bring my own oil and filter for everything except major stuff that I don't know what parts needed.

I agree, with some good tools, and some nice weather, and a little bit of time, its good to work on your own truck.
