I have a friend who mixes his diesel 50-50 with filtered used Veg oil. What should be his major concerns in doing this?

My only concern would be any water issues. Doesn't used oil have some water in it? I'm really don't know for sure but they talk about injectors and lines rusting from moisture in the fuel as well as 'dewatering' the wvo. Just something to think about. ;)

I run veggie oil but nowhere near 50/50. I'll do about a quart or two per tank if I have it, when its warm. As long as its filtered well, he shouldn't have a problem.

I live in Ohio and have now started up again using wvo. I run about 4-5 gallons per tank. I pre-mix it in 5 gallon jugs and dump it in. No problems here. But you do have to pre-filter it down to about 5 microns and de-water it either by heating it up or through a centrifuge.

A couple of possible problems come to my mind. Aside from the water issue the waste veggie oil is going to have a bunch of free fatty acids in it. Given enough time, those acids are probably going to start eating stuff. Expensive stuff, or cheap stuff that clogs expensive stuff. Also if the viscosity of the blend is too thick you may not be getting a good pattern from the injectors and this could lead to coking. The thicker fluid could also cause some premature wear in the injection pump. That is why the WVO conversions all have some way of heating the veggie oil to a hundred sixty degrees before it gets to the pump. That gets the viscosity down closer to dino diesel.
