I am going to install the cab lights on my truck the way the used to be, 5 seperate lights in stead of 2 outsiders and a cluster of 3 in the middle. Should I go 1..2..3..4..5 or 1...2.3.4...5? See what I mean? Any opinions would be appreciated and pics would be better. The lights I bought are the pacer high fives.

Why would you want to put the stock amber cab lights on your truck, when the clear cab lights are available now? Just a thought.):h

I just installed a set of Hi Five Pacers and they are the 2 outsiders and the 3 lamp cluster. Maybe they also make the five individual lamps and call them the Hi Fives? Anyways,to answer your question,I'd space them 1...2.3.4...5 .

the 1..2..3..4..5 configuration resembles the old Fords . but if thats what you like, go for it . that's only my opinion. Good luck.

Anybody know where I could get the old style 1 2 3 4 5 SMOKED lights for a Chevy?

I got mine from partsworld.com and they offer them in smoked too.

Gonefishin
I considered the new clear ones and the smoked ones too but I just prefer the old amber one, Im sorta a dinosaur I guess, even though Im only 25.

Converted
They (partsworld.com) has both the five separate ones and the 2-3 setup and call them both high fives, it struck me as odd too.

im going 1...2.3.4...5, thanks for everyones opinion and thanks to tophog in advance for his DIY post.

I wish Lund would make smoked ones for the Visors they make for the trucks. That would look good on different colors

Any opinions would be appreciated......

Well, since you asked, I think old school looks out of place on a modern truck.

I'm not that crazy about the 3 cluster either but wanted to stay true to the trucks year and styling.

Yes I went with clear but used the stock style lights and pattern.

Well I must be retarded because every website you guys point me to has what I consider the "new" GM style cab lights with the one big light in the center and then the two separate marker lamps to the side: 1....-----....1

I want 5 INDIVIDUAL smoked lights so I can do like Chevy used to do back in the good old days: 1...2.3.4...5

So does anybody know where I could find these? I've found them in the clear and super-white versions, but not the smoked. Thanks!

Here is what I did. I don't like the big light in the middle either, so I installed the five individual lights. I think it looks great on the new truck. It doesn't look out of place on an '05 to me.

That's exactly what I'm after, only in smoked! That is one sharp looking truck, though, with the amber lights. Mine is the same color, so maybe I'd like the amber ones. Where did you find those?

Thanks! I really like the amber lights. I'm sure the smoked would look really nice too, but I didn't know about those when I ordered mine. I found them here. http://accessory-center.com/default.plx/30/1559

I bought the set on the upper right of the page "Chevy style cab roof lights".
They look great at night, and I much prefer this look to the new style with the big light in the middle. The install wasn't bad at all. All the wiring is included with a switch...if you want to use it. I just tapped into my parking lights instead. The longest part of the install is just getting them spaced the way you want them. I can give you the measurements I used.

I hate to say this but I like the DODGE amber lights..........but in the 1 - 234 - 5 style on a GM truck.

I agree that the center light bar should have been the old style individual lights........

IMHO that looked the best........

Mine look just like Robbs, great! I think these lights rule, gotta add 10 horse power a piece ):h . The 3 middle guys being seperate definitely makes for a much brighter set up IMO. Gotta say though the clears on TopHogs truck sure do look sweet. If I had a white truck that might be the way to go, especially if your turn signals and parking lights are clear too.

Tophog, we need another picture at night :) And did you keep the super white bulbs, or replace them with a silvered amber bulb?

tophog
02-18-2005, 10:51 PM
I'll take some night picts after I eat some pizza. I pained the turn signal bulbs with silver engine paint. I read on here somewhere a guy did that to his vette bulbs engine and turned out great. Mine didn't turn out so hot so I did something wrong. They look great when not illuminated but the output is reduced signficantly when on ...and you can see speckles on the bulb where the light shines thru the paint. May end up getting some of those chrome bulbs or whatever they are called. would be nice to get replacement headlight and lower housings with clear corners. Will post some night picts later. Note, I installed amber bulbs in the cab lights ... clear lights are illegal in Oregon.

tophog

Here are a few night picts. My dig camera sucks for night picts...could be operator error I guess :) Note the factory cab light bulbs are 194's ... 3.4watt. The Recon's come with 5watt bulbs and think they are a 2825 or something like that. I found some in town but not in amber so I just went with amber 194's. Look plenty bright for me.

Looks good! Now I don't know which way to go. Let me know if you find clear corners for our trucks. I've got my name on lists with two seperate suppliers, but so far the manufacturer(s) haven't released them.

I'm curious about that law. Is that law specific to cab lights? If so, I thought it only applied if the vehicle is required to have the lights (3500 or larger) in the first place. Since our trucks (2500) aren't required to have the lights adding them aftermarket and using any light we would like shouldn't fall under this law, though I have no idea. I'm just curious to know what specifically you have heard/read about the law so I don't get myself in trouble with super white if I go that way.

My next door neighbor is a state cop. I asked him a few weekends ago if they had to be amber and he said "yep" ...but didn't go into specifics. I wonder where a person could find out for sure?

sp33d
02-19-2005, 12:05 AM
Good question. I don't remember where I read that they were required by law on all 3500 and larger trucks. I know I've read that they are required but if this is actually true I couldn't tell you as I don't remember the source.

It's just my assumption that since they aren't required on the 2500 that if you put them on you can use any light you want. I would assume it must be legal at least somewhere for them to be made/shipped with super white bulbs.

Maybe your neighbor could clarify? I'll see if I can find out where I read that...

Our headlights and lower housings are all one piece with the outside being amber. I was under the impression one would have to replace the entire units whereas in earlier years the corners are separate housings.

Our existing headlights:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7954752140&category=33710#ebayphotohosting

I have been thinking of gettings headlights like this which have the clear corner but not sure how they would look/perform.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7949961134&category=33710&sspagename=WD1V

The bottom unit also has amber sides and I haven't found any replacements for those.

02-19-2005, 12:12 AM
I know for certain you can't use "any" color light ... at least blue, red, etc. here in Oregon. Years ago guys used to have the blue and red bugshields but the state outlaw'd them saying they could make rigs look like emergency vehicles. I'll ask my neighbor if he can expand on the laws regarding the lights when I see him next.

sp33d
02-19-2005, 12:21 AM
I've got the headlights in the second auction (Clear Diamond I believe is what they are called). I meant the bottom units (the assembly with the driving lights). I am still waiting on something to replace them.

I know we aren't allowed to have any light, specifically red or blue. I've never had a problem (from the law) with the super whites as driving bulbs. I couldn't say with 100% certainty that it was legal, but I've had them over a year with no problems. I've just spent 15 minutes searching local laws and can't find a thing about cab lights. Will have to keep searching.

So how do you like the aftermarket headlights? Got any picts? :) I've got to quit the accessorizing as I need to be saving for a tranny upgrade!

sp33d
02-19-2005, 12:29 AM
They look a lot better. They look a bit out of place in my opinion with the amber reflectors in the bottom lenses so I'm hoping a replacement is out soon. I'll get a couple picks in the next couple days for you.

point of interest.

Ive got a 3500 single rear wheel, not dooley. it came without cab lights, I was kinda pissed, but i dont know what the laws are about them being required on 1 tons and up. whatever the laws are mine came without em and mines a one ton. while im at it, i see SRW in a lot of guys sigs, whats this stand for? single rear wheel?

sweet rig top hog, i really like the lighted onkis and the big mouth

sp33d
02-19-2005, 12:39 AM
That makes this more interesting. I know I read somewhere they were required. Could have been false information, or maybe it's only state specific (like having a front license plate).

I've got a couple friends with clear cab marker lights and none of them have had trouble. I try not to draw much attention to myself from the law when possible, and hate giving them a reason to pull me over so I'd like to find something concrete on this. I know none of them have asked and they probably don't realize it may not be legal. May just have to ask a trooper.

SRW = single rear wheel

cdhd2001

The cab lights are required when the vehicle reaches a certain width. The quadrasteer 1500's are required to have cab lights and clearance lights on the rear fenders due to the extra width of the rear axle. Same applies to the H2's.

I am having trouble finding DOT literature that clearly defines the exact rules.

So the requirment is based on width. That would explain why the 3500 SRW didn't have them. 3500 DRW's would be required to have them though if I'm reading that correctly.

It indicates they have to be yellow when required, but doesn't say anything about color when they aren't required. I would think that since they are being added for looks and aren't required that you could choose the color. Since it's a federal law and they are being manufactured, my best guess would be that if they aren't required on your truck and you choose to install them you can put super white in them if you want. I'm going to go with super white unless I don't like the looks of them.

80" width is magic number. 80" or wider are required to have amber clearance lights and width marker lights on the cab (aka. amber cab clearance lights), rear red clearance lights (3 red lights in center rear), and side marker lights (one amber and one red on dually fenders or on the front & rear of a service body).

I have a srw service body on my truck now (hauler bed). I am 80" exact and I am required to have amber cab lights installed. So I am trying to decide if the "tear drop" are OK, or should I go with oem. I will place the tear drops on the cab today and take some pics for you guys to see and evaluate before I install them.

I have read all of the posts regarding the laws. When we started the manufacturing process, we wanted to make sure that the Clear Cab Lights were legal. We have all the neccessary documentation from NHTSA as far as the legalities go. To answer all of the questions regarding the light color, here goes.

1) You can not have red lights facing forward> ONLY facing the rear.
2) In 32 states it is LEGAL to have super white bulbs in your cab lights.
3) You are allowed to have amber, or superwhite bulbs facing forward, but not facing the rear(only constant on)"reverse lights"
4) With all this said, our Clear Cab Roof lights will be coming with ALL amber bulbs moving forward as of June due to requests, as well as the remaining states that suggest only amber bulbs allowed.

I hope this helps, and please feel free to ask any questions.

Thanks. It's a Precision Design shell/grille combo called a big-mouth. It completely replaces the 03/04 shell/grille and there are a variety of grille options available. Yes, you have to have painted to match. It will set you back about 5 bills after you have it painted. The grille you see on my truck is the "Phat billet" grille where the bars are about twice as thick as a normal billet grille.

You can read more about there here. http://www.precisiondesign.com/

Actually I'm very pleased with the grille and get lots of compliments as I have yet to see another truck around my area with one installed. I guess the grille provides a different look ...at least different enough to make people wonder what type.year the truck is.
