my factory hitch is about done. pin holes are stretched and worn out, its rusting, its saggged a lilttle. so its time for a new one and want the best one i can buy for the price. I know Reese is a option. are the Curt hitches any good? any other suggestions and where to buy one?

I've always heard good things about the putnam xdr hitches but I don't have one myself.

I put one of those on my truck due to the numerous recommendations here on the site. Lucky I did b/c there was some pretty bad deterioration to the hitch I didnt see until it was removed.

I have the Putnam XDR and it's hands down better and stouter than the OEM hitch. I towed with it a couple of times and it seems to be doing great. My OEm hitch pin holes started stretching after only a couple of tows of the toyhauler which was about 9k loaded with WD bars.

X2 on the putnam XDR. I can't tell a difference, with the exception of the weight, but the peace of mind is there. And that is a lot more than I can say about the stock hitch. Can't vouch for the curt or reese, but I am sure they are fine. Easy to install also. I bought mine at trailerpart.com. Jerry.

I would read this before I buy a Putnam.

I am also looking for a class five and am now unsure what to buy. I certainly don't want my frame rails bent!

Ditch the stock nut on the frame and use the square plates. The Putnam hitch is really nice and the price is hard to beat.

I recently pulled my OEM hitch off and replaced the Square tube. I pull heavy at times and have never had a problem with it except for the pin holes elongating. I've heard all of the horror stories about the OEM hitch and have been keeping a sharp eye on it.

On the new tube I welded a hardened washer on both sides, to help prevent it from wearing. I haven't put it back on yet, but when I do I will monitor it closely. tpitt

Does the fact that this happened on a Dodge truck have anything to do with this problem? I'm not saying the truck is the problem, but rather the desing of the specific hitch for this truck. I just ordered a Putnam hitch for my truck, so I hope this is just a very rare problem. In my case I wanted to switch because of the 900lbs tonge weight of our TT. This is dry weight.

A lot of folks like the XDR. I put a Tow Beast on my truck and love it. It's big and burly and looks like what should have come on a HD pickup.

what's the tow rating on these? I seen one on a new service truck at the office today that was 16oo/16ooo

The Putnam XDR is advertised at 16,000lbs pulling, with a 1,600lbs tonge weight.

Have any of you guys had problems with the long spacers that go on top of the frame covering the oversize holes. I just installed a Putnam XDR and those spacers at the front of the receiver are bent inward. I am wondering if I need to fix that or not. Has anyone out there with a Putnam had this happen?

I didnt have a problem with mine. You must have tightened the piss out of them.

To fix them or not, hopefully some one can help answer that.

Are they bent pretty bad or a little bit?

I guess I must have tightened them a little to much. The spacer on the driver's side is the one that is the worse. The one on the other side is just slightly destorded.

Did your hitch come with more than two of those long plates? Mine came with one for each side. I think they should make this plates a little thicker.
