It's not really going to stop me from getting one :D but since he had a 1980's 5 series turbo diesel bmw, he thinks diesel is way to dirty. If you all remember diesels in their earlier use, smoke comes out from EVERYWHERE you go.

Any reasons I can tell him that would ease his thoughts about a diesel truck?

One can be:

I drove the Dmax at the autoshow in motion and there was barely any diesel smoke that i could see.

For towing its going to get way better mileage and have an easier time than a gasser.

he is comparing diesels of 2005 to the ones from 1980?? Wow.. big change since then. more efficient, more power, MUCH cleaner, burn cleaner than gassers, last 200,000 miles easily, resale is HIGH, list could go on and on..

If you are the one paying for it, get what you want.

My Father in law retired as a mechanic & also felt the same way, UNTIL I showed up with my D/A. He won't drive it,BUT he was holding on for dear life when we went for a spin. He commented that it was UNBELIVABLE that this was a diesel!! He even wanted to see that it was a diesel afterwards!! Howard

You guys talk about blowing smoke like its a bad thing? ):h

Go to the local Chevy dealer and go for a test drive in one. Let him make up his own mind. Probably wouldnt believe a bunch of yahoo's on the internet scattered all over the country anyway.

IMHO, 9 times out of 10 you won't change his mind no matter what you do especially since he's an older guy. Don't try to understand him and don't try to make him understand you. Get what you want.

Well, my Pop was the one that convinced me to get a D/A. Unfortunately, he died a couple of weeks ago. Forget the arguing with Pop, just enjoy his company . . .

my condolences to you flivver.

mole177, flivver is right. get what you want and enjoy it. none of us know when our time may come, or those of our loved ones. the thing to do is enjoy life to the most. and remember, you can't take it when you leave this world but everyone that knows you will know that you had fun and was happy. my pop didn't believe me when i told him to get one and now he wants one. my cousin bought his just a few months ago but both his parents have passed away, 9 months apart, in the past year. so live it up and enjoy their company. you never know.

Take pop for a test drive. I swore after I owned an 82 6.2 Silverado it would be my last diesel. Then I took a ride in a Duramax. When folks ask me how it runs, I tell them it's the badest SOB I ever sat my a$$ in the seat of. I ran I40 from Little Rock, AR to NC pulling 7000 lbs or so (I know that ain't a lot), running 70 in OD and it never downshifted the first time. The closest thing I ever had to it was a 454. It pulled decently, but it wouldn't pass a gas station.
