Hi,

I have questions about the temperature gauge. I thought when I first bought by truck in 05 that it would read around 195 all the time unless I was towing and it would get a little hotter. Then about 8 months ago I noticed it would move from about 170 - 200 all the time. I can set cruise control on the freeway for 65 and drive 50 miles and the only gauge on my dash that moves the whole time is the temp. So I take it to the dealer and they find one stuck thermostat. Now it's heats up quicker and the guage moves a little slower but it still moves. I can drive around town and it's at 195 and as soon as I take my foot off the gas (about 3-5 seconds after) the gauge starts moving down then up again. So I took it in again and they say everything test out good, and that is just normal for this diesel. This is my first diesel so I don't know. I limited car knowledge tells me this isn't the truth. What do you guys & gals think? Thanks... Sorry about the long winded post.

My temp gauge does not do that. It is steady.

Sounds odd to me too.

mine stays steady, unless out outside temps get low

Figures, they tell you its normal. Find another dealer fast! It is NOT normal.

My gauge does move around a little. When I stop at a light or drive thru window, the temps will decrease a little. Now with that said, let's compare Chevrolet's temp gauge to another engine such as Caterpillar. The Cat engine will make some pretty substantial swings downward when slowing down or stopping. The Chevrolet gauge is fairly constant due to computer control on what the gauge should read. The gauge and the actual temperature may be different and that has been proven by others on this board. Chevrolet's gauge solution is the first gauge I have ever seen on a diesel that holds a steady reading.

I think you are fine based on what you said on your initial post.

Here is a example of what I was talking about on the previous thread. It has been hotly contested on this site over the years.

I put an Edge controller on my LLY 3500. It has a temp gauge from the engine computer. The Dash gauge heats up like my 6.oL Gas motor would. The Edge temp gauge reading from the computer moves around from 183 at long idles to 193 on the highway, no load. The edge never reads as warm as the dash gauge. The Edge gauge shows the same temps as a heat-temp gun I put on the motor. The strange thing is, the factory trans temp gauge is fairly close.
