Hello all,

I just joined this forum today, after acquiring my new to me 1996 3/4 6.5 diesel. It has 195000K. or about 120,000 miles for my American friends

The truck seems to run faultless, looks like new, but I have no service record history on it.

My understanding is that it was largely used to haul a 5th wheel trailer.

It has pyro, boost and transmission temp guages.

I have no owners manual, and though I am mechanically inclined, have no idea where these guages should indicate.

I have the "Diesel Supplement" to the owners manual but no basic manual.

Any suggestions as to service recomendations, things to watch for, etc. would be appreciated greatly.

I have no indication of when the last servicing was done, but the general appearance of the truck is that it was well respected.

Thanks in advance.

Alan

If you go to http://gm-diesel.com (http://gm-diesel.com/) and ask simi-crazy on the "i got a new tool today" post, you'll get the GM service history but no other.

Can you say what boost psi and pyro temps your seeing so far?

Thanks to both of you (Turbine Doc and Quantum Mechanic)for your quick responses.

Turbine, I have checked the FAQs and notes at the top. Maybe my poor search skills but couldn't find what I wanted.

Quantum, this truck is only 3 days old for me, and as yet hasn't done any real work.

That being said, EGT is around 400 degrees F.
Boost is from 0 (at idle and loafing) to, I think, 8 lbs.
Transmission (auto) so far 180 F

Thanks again

Is EGT probe pre turbine or post? Pre turbine EGT limit is 1250*F post turbine 1050*F
8 psi is ok

I"m not sure about the pyro re before or after the turbo. The gage is redlined at about 1050F. So I assume it's after.

It's frustrating not having the manual and any service history.

BTW I checked out the link with semi-crazy and requested a service record. He's a good soul to do such things for us. :)

And Thanks to you as well.

Alan my suggestion for the FAQs was to give you a heads on what some of the common trouble spots are; the Faqs are links to questions that have been asked of others before, your question is a little generic, if info you are after isn't there could you start a new thread for a specific question that I can turn into a link.

It will help you & next person who might have the same information need. Also if we lump 1 answer to many questions it hinders ability to use the search engine for a specific topic. Also when you get some time go to users CP and update your signature after checking RPO codes in the FAQs to let us know what you have in way of equipment. Complete set of manuals available from www.helminc.com (http://www.helminc.com/) or sometime a used but good set comes up on ebay or other book sites.

With your VIN your GM dealar can give you the GM service history for free, of course it won't have non GM work logged into it.
