I know this isn't a "tractor" but thought if anyone knew it would be peeps in here.

Anyways my rider has been acting up for at least two years when starting. It seems new batteries don't make a difference or even when using a charger in the start mode. The thing struggles to start, sounds like when getting a dead battery. I've cleaned all connectors and checked ground. Battery terminals are tight. Its too the point that it will not start at all anymore.

What I'm thinking it is would be the starter. The brushes are probably worn. I don't know that I can change just the brushes on this starter. Haven't really tore into it yet.

Anybody else think this could be the problem or should I be looking into something else?

My dad has an old cub that the starter is the alternator as well. When we put a new engine in his, it cranked over slow. Bought a kit and rebuilt the starter/generator. It still doesn't crank it over like a good starter on flywheel setup, but it does turn it over better then what it did.

Still haven't had time to look at the thing more. My buddy had a 4 wheeler and it kept acting like the battery was dead. Bought a new one and still didn't work. Dealer said to replace the brushes on the starter and it worked perfectly. So thats why I was wondering if maybe I had the same prob. Really sux now cause our grass is growing quick, it won't stop raining !! And i just don't wanna give in and take it to the shop yet. :p:

:horsey:here now........

This thing has ran like a top since we bought it as a demo model in 93. Great running mower. Only this we have had to fix is the clutch for PTO and a few belts. Can't complain at all with the ol Cub.

Especially if you can get an older model cub. Those things were built like tanks! I think that my dad's is somewhere in the 70's era. They are one tough tractor. I would rank them alongside a Deere but with less cost when/if things break.

Go to the doityourself forum, alot of small engine wizards there. If this is a newer engine I has the plastic gear on the starter wear and it would bind up while turning the engine over and it would turn it slow.

Anything from that era was built better. We have a MF 12 ( awaiting resto....), had a Ford LGT 165, and they were built like tanks.

We have a loaner JD X500, (we are waiting for a deck for our 1523), which was traded in @ 18 hours for a new GC2300, it is built better than alot out there, but still no where near as good as the ones I listed above, or anything from that era.
