I just purchased 2006 LLY, loaded LT, all stock with 17,710 miles on it and factory 3/36 warranty good to September. :)
I'm looking at extended warrantys and wondering if the gamble is worth the savings. $2,997.00 will get me a 100,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty to June of 2014. I had an extended warranty on my Ford Expedition and it was well worth it(but then again that was a Ford), but I don't have a extended warranty on my 04 Monte Carlo and it was a good gamble and savings of $1,600.00.;)
What is the experience of people who have put 100,000 miles on their Duramax trucks and the resultant service dollars after the 3/36 warranty covered expenses? What about transmissions and drive train issues? I understand my engine is covered for 100,000, but not the transmision and drive train because it is an 06. My primary use is to pull a 7,000 lb boat and 11,000 lb 5th wheel trailer. Thanks for any input anyone can offer

Thanks for the reply, I've reserched quite a bit, and the best I could find so far on a 6 year 100,000 mile bumper to bumper is even $2,000 with 70/mo no interest payments after 450 down........
One thing I was wondering is experience that diesel owners have had with repairs and frequency and seriousness of repairs up to 100,000 miles?:)

I agree with GMPP, i bought the bumper to bumper with $0 deductable. I use it for every squeak and noise i hear. Beleive me, by the time you hit 100k you will have done tie rods, wheel bearings and most likely u-joints. I already had the HVAC resister and wire harness, tranny lines, and power steering lines replaced under warranty. Next trip in will be the radio. What does all of these repairs cost if it wasnt under warranty? I also like the fact that they are using GM parts to go back on.

to each his own but I think extended warranty is a rip off. you can buy a heck of a lot of tie rod and u joints for $2,997. I guess if you punish the heck out of your truck and break stuff everyday then it may be worth it but I am 52 and have had many new cars. was talked into the extended warranty on the first one. kept the car 12 years and 156,000 miles and never used it, once. never bought it again and have never had the need for it. all the money I saved on what the extended warranty would have cost for all the vehicles I've bought has probably bought my last truck.

I used to be one of the people to say to stay away from them but i just got one on my used lbz from the dealer and they gave me a what i concider a good deal. I got it for 1200.00 and im going to nit pick the truck and get my moneys worth with any luck. But its too early to tell yet. One thing is for sure its good peace of mind IMO.

I have done some research on extended warranties and the third party warranties are much more affordable and they claim to cover all the same parts. Has anyone had problems with them?

I'd be careful with the 3rd party. Years ago I had a car the A/C went out on. The 3rd party bastards replaced the compressor but wouldn't cover the 0-rings and the dryer that have to be replaced with the compressor. Basically they nit-picked me to death. Ya, it saved some money on that job but the aggravation of dealing with this or that being covered or not was miserable.

I would strongly advise you not to purhcase an aftermarket extended contract. They cover nothing and weasel their way out of repairs. I had one company decline front diff side bearing replacement in a half ton Sierra because the guy had a snow plow on the truck...The only extended warranty worth anything is GMPP MAJOR GUARD with a $0 ded. Just my emperience...

I had a Third party warranty on my last truck that I just got rid of when I bought the 06 Duramax. The warranty was 5 year 150,000 miles on a 99 Ford Expedition and at 145,000 miles replaced just about everything under the truck and front crank seal, rear seal, valve cover gaskets, one head gasket and rear axle seal. Total was around 4500.00 and everything but 500.00 was approved by the arranty company. I sold the Expedition recently with 175,000 miles on it and someone got a great deal on a good truck with a lot of low miles parts on it. :)
I also had a 900.00 5 year 0 deductable thrid party warranty on a 200 HP outbourd motor that I ended up collecting about 2800.00. Tried to extend it, but the company stopped insuring outboards.
On the flip side, I've had two cars that I did not get an extended warranty on and have not spent enough money on to make a extended warranty worthwhile. :D
That being said, I was wondering how many people with high meliage 05 and 06's have had extended work done that would encourage me to spring for a 6 year 100,000 mile 0 deductable warranty for around 2900.00. I will be doing a lot of towing in the 10,000 lb range.
Thanks for all the inpur so far. Appreciate averyones opinion.

Can you purchase a GMPP warranty after the purchase ? I have a 2006 I bought used a year ago (still only has 26,000 miles on it) Is it too late to go into a GM dealer and buy an extended warranty?

You can purchase an extended warranty any time up to and even after the original factory warranty expires. The difference is the cost. Under 20K miles and still in warranty the most reasonable and after that different scenerios are different prices. That holds true for all aftermarket warranties and GMPP.

I bought the GMPP for peice of mind and it has already paid for itself and i still have 50k of coverage yet. I used to be a GM tech so i know alot of the problems that i will have with the truck. I am sure the warranty will pay for itself at least one more time before it is up. Sure i could fix it myself but that is time out of my day and i am still down a vehicle, the warranty will give me a free loaner if need be. I had the extended warranty on my wifes Honda Odysee and beleive me, i used it. That warranty more then paid for itself too and this is a Honda, the best car on the road in my mind as far as reliability.

Thanks for all lyour input, I did buy a Mechanical Repair Service contract through my GM dealer Bumper to Bumper coverage with no deductable at their dealership. $100.00 deductable out of the area at other places when I'm traveling. The coverage adds 5 years to my existing warranty that just expired last September and ends in September 2013 with a total mileage coverage of 100,000 miles. I currently have 21,000 miles on the truck and paid $2700.00 after much searching and negotiating. I purchsed it as the factory warranty was expiring and there was 19,860 miles on the truck. You can purchase bumper to bumper coverage at any time, but the price paid is determined by your mileage, is existing warranty still in effect, etc, etc. The further out of warranty and the more miles you have, the higher the price. If you research all of the 3rd party people and document the pricing, then go to your GM dealer, they will find a way to meet or beat the best price you found in most cases. If you wait a while after you get quotes, the 3rd party people aslo send you emails with "SPECIALS", 4th of July savings, End of Summer Sale, etc etc. That generally knocks a couple hundred dollars off their original quote. Take that to the GM dealer but don't tell them there is a time limit for you to accept the offer. I hope this information was helpful.
I'll let you know how I make out repair cost VS warranty cost, if this thread is still open in the future.

Another update on my use of GMPP. My LBZ is at the dealer for new head gaskets, 2 new heads, a new steering box, one new inner tie rod and wheel alignment. I just bought another 06 LBZ RCLB that i will be putting GMPP on too.

Here are the latest quotes I got from GM and their 800 number. I called them because I am worried about being ripped off by a non GM affiliated seller and not have coverage at a GM dealer.

My truck now has 33K miles.I also get a penalty for business use and plowing.

5 years/ 75K miles/ $100.00 deductible - $ 3025.00 and with a $200.00 deductible - $2,600.00.
Which is actually in line with internet discounters once you add in the $500.00 penalty for business use and plowing. GM also has a 18 month interrest free payment plan which I couldn'r see with any of the "free agents".

I guess prices have gone up somewhat, huh?????????

I paid a little over $2K for GMPP Major Gaurd 5yr 100K $0 deductable in 2005. I'd say your prices are very high. Unless they have gone up substantially?
