: Good Buy?
Dr-Boost 02-14-2005, 06:58 PM I've been wanting a turbo diesel and an enclosed trailer to tow my GN for sometime now. I came across a 02 GMC crew cab 3500 dually with 18k miles. Truck is mint without a scratch and loaded except for leather. It also has many extras and ad ons such as a cap, running boards, some performance parts, etc. It also comes with a 2000 Haulmark 24' trailer and all the towing equipment. The trailer is also mint and has very low miles. The trailer is basic without to many extras.
It is part of an estate sale and the guy is willing to take $28.5k for everything truck, trailer and accessories. The truck was purchased to take harley's to Stugress and hasn't been used for anything but towing bikes to shows.
Is this a good deal or not? From what I've read it seems like a pretty decent deal. Problem is I wasn't in the market right now and don't really move on it unless it is something I should really jump on. I also really wanted a 2500 and not the dually.
TIA
Chris Lyons
RickDLance 02-14-2005, 07:45 PM Sounds like a good deal to me. The market is a little soft right now. The trailer has to be worth around $5000. If the truck's a 4x4 it is an even better deal.
SteveNorCal 02-14-2005, 08:07 PM IMO it is a "very" good deal!! I'd jump on it. :)
Goldsburg 02-14-2005, 08:42 PM Count my vote as "Good Deal". Jump on it!!! :grd: :ro)
The payoff on my truck (alone) is just below that!
lccent 02-14-2005, 09:05 PM :offtopic: I have a 02 2500 hd red with all the bells and whistles Ive been in the market for a dually if you want we could get together and discuss the details. I have a predator power chip stainless steel step bars, air bags, spray in bed liner, roll top cover, Break Controller, Pac Brake, about 38000 miles on it only use it for towing. I bought a fifth wheel last November which would tow much better with a dually. If you want to work out a deal for a trade let me know? P.M. me and I can send you some picks. I have a clean title and would be willing to work a deal. Let me know
blnagel 02-14-2005, 09:15 PM Jump on it!

Grey Ghost 02-14-2005, 10:06 PM An '02 with 18k miles?
Get it while the gettin's good!:grd: .
kbstinky 02-14-2005, 10:19 PM Let me know if you don't want it. I could buy it for parts at that price.
:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
Dr-Boost 02-15-2005, 08:10 AM Thanks guys. The truck is a 4x4, I live in Ohio and really wouldn't consider anything else. I figured it was a good deal but definitely feel better about it now. I'm meeting the guy later today so I will post pics and detials later today.
Iccent I maybe interested in something. Where are you located? Send me some pics. drlyons@advchiro.com

Dr-Boost 02-17-2005, 09:21 AM Well, I bought it. I'm waiting on the guy to get the title from the bank and will hopefully get it home this weekend. The truck was REALLY dirty as it has been sitting in a warehouse for months. It looks like it hasn't moved in at least 6 months. It was in execellent condition though. Not a dent or scratch that I could see. It was an SLE with all the basic options. The owner added a Banks six gun chip right before he passed away, it dosen't have any other performance options.
I'm still up in the air about keeping it or tradign for a 2500. If I keep it I'm going paint the chrome bumpers and grill to match. Add some Alcoa wheels and a suncoast ram air hood.
Chris
SteveNorCal 02-17-2005, 10:22 AM Let me be the first to say, Congratulations!! Nice Pics too....:cool2:
Kennedy 02-17-2005, 10:36 AM I think you probably got a decent deal in all, but I'd look at the payload of the trailer. Looks like an econo unit 2 ton. From the pics it looks like the wall posts are on 2' centers You can tell by the distance between rows of screws. This isn't all bad, just sub standard. I'd not push the 4,000# payload thing though if traveling any distance. The 3500# axles will take it fairly well, but if you push it you'll have more problems than with a 5200# axle setup.
You should get good $$ for the trailer should you decide to sell it and be well on your way to the price of a beefier unit.
Keep in mind it is hard to tell by the pics. I'd say very good buy overall!

Thanks,
I wasn't overly excited about the trailer. It definitely will need some service and upgrades to make it fit my needs. I have a Grand National I race a lot and wanted an enclosed trailer. The car with all the crap I haul will be close to 4000# and not much more. The trailer is rated at 7000#. I figure it's a good place to start.
Kennedy 02-17-2005, 04:12 PM Is that 2' centers? I'm generally pretty good at spotting them.
Funny thing is, so darn many guys with expensive toys go so darn cheap on their trailers. Never could figure it out...
SteveNorcal,
Have you seen the latest from Deere? Soon as they process my order, I'll have a 3720 turbocharged, AND intercooled 44HP Yanmar powered compact tractor...
dmaxfan 02-17-2005, 04:15 PM I would love to have that trailer. It would work fine for my uses.
Kennedy 02-17-2005, 04:20 PM I should add you'll probably be looking for something with an escape door over the fenders to allow you to open the car door...
SteveNorCal 02-17-2005, 04:39 PM SteveNorcal,

About 8 HP more than mine! You gonna chip it and run it on your dyno?? ):h Let's see some pics when you get.
Kennedy 02-20-2005, 02:53 PM It will be a good mate for my JD 455 with the little Yanmar diesel...
TheBac 02-20-2005, 03:34 PM Congrats DrBoost......thats a good buy. Even if you have to sell the trailer and buy a heavier duty one, you are still big-time $$ ahead! :thumb:

Yes, you can't beat that Yanmar diesel. Very dependable work motor!
Donnie 1 02-20-2005, 08:07 PM Thanks,

Good deal, but i would unload the trailer.
your car and stuff is 4000 lb. and the trailer probably weights about 3000 lb. so your maxed out.
the 7000 lb. rating is trailer plus cargo.
kbstinky 02-20-2005, 10:00 PM Sometimes you step in a pile of something and it smells good.
Your truck buy was a sweet deal.
Enjoy
Dr-Boost 02-22-2005, 08:44 AM Thanks Guys,
I've been driving it since Saturday and I like the truck more than I thought I would. The long wheel base and dually hasn't been an issue. I even took it to the mall and the video store. The wife has some issues getting in and out of the thing with all 5' 100# of her. I'm still up in the air on whether to trade it or not. I have a friend who is a salesman at the GMC dealer who wants the truck and wants to put me into an 03 SLT 2500HD CC. I can also trade in my current ride 2000 Jeep GC.
We drove my firends BMW in to pick it up and towed it back in the trailer. The truck tows really well and has plenty of power. It has a Banks Six-gun installed but the speed loader was never installed. I towed with it on #1. I've had it up to #4 since I've been back and the power increase is impressive. I can't wait to see what #5 or #6 has.
I didn't realize the load rating included the trailer weight. My car empty is 3200 the trailer is 3500#. I'm going to be real close with tools, generator etc. Something to think about before I put $$ into it. I wanted to redo the interior and replace some of the exterior trim. Dmaxfan shoot me a PM.
