: Questions?
MSP561 05-11-2008, 08:17 PM 1) I have an 03 that is having some starting issues. When the truck is cold, it starts fine. After its up to running temp and I shud it off for a bit, when I try to start it, the truck will turn over but not fire. I checked the fuel filter which was just changed about a week ago and it is seems to be holding prime, but after I crank it the bulb starts to get soft. Yesterday, I was out of town and had just filled up and the thing would not start!!!!! I called a buddy and he told me to spray a litt starting fluid. and then it started up .... he thought that maybe the oil pump or switch might not be working right? Any ideas would be appreciated....
2) I have a ppe tuner standard. What is the best setting for economy? How about towing 4500 to 5,000 lbs?
Thanks
sparky1562 05-11-2008, 08:24 PM At least one of your injectors has gone south. Hard starts (usually when hot) is a symptom. I assume it starts fine if you let it sit until it is well cooled off?
Don't use starting fluid on a Diesel! You will do more damage that good.
Fill out your sig and tell us all about your truck, any Mods?
Tune 1 or 2 on the PPE are the "Economy Tunes" but I can't keep my foot out of tune 2 to see. I wouldn't tow higher than tune 2, and a larger exhaust.
MSP561 05-11-2008, 08:37 PM I have 5" exhaust, ppe and thats it for mods................ I just bought this truck 3 weeks ago w/ 145k on it. I guess that the injectors going would also explain not very good mpg? A week and a half ago, I got 22 mpg and on the same trip in the past few days, 15.8 mpg. So now what.... from what I understand, the injectors are warrentied until 200k. Is this true????? What do I need to do to check to see if in fact it is inj.s? Will a scan tool do this? Thanks oh when you tow with the ppe on #2 setting, do u still use tow/haul setting?
shortcircut65 05-11-2008, 09:22 PM it is much easier on your trans if you use t/h. it locks the coverter in second gear, therefore keeping the t/c from creating alot of unwanted heat. and i think it just pulls better when the converter is locked. MHO.

Read through the policy. When mine went bad, it got steadily worse, first long cranks, 4-5 seconds, when hot. Then 7, 8, until no start at all.
You can check your balance rates with the PPE, but even if they are bad, it will not get you injectors. The dealer has to run the tests mentioned in the policy. The only real way to tell is for them to do the return rate test, which involves removing the return lines and measuring the amount returned.
Search this site, read a alot, and you will be prepared before you take it to a dealer.
BTW, your description was not detailed, but it sounded like injectors to me. Some guys have had cracked filter housings, that when hot would let air in and thus no start. You said it is not loosing prime so I did not go there.
My milage was not that bad, never lost power that I could tell (did not tow as heavy then as I do now). If it's just returning fuel, not dumping it in the crankcase, not sure it would loose much power until the rail pressure just does not hold.
Good Luck!

1) Possible reasons: Bad batch of fuel (filter clogged), filter O-ring may not be seated correctly, filter not tight enough on head, O-ring seal on bleeder is bad, head may have small crack
2) Either of the lower settings, but you also have to keep your foot out of it.
If you have to use some sort of alternative fuel to start a Dmax, use WD40. starting fluid will make things go "Pop!"
MSP561 05-12-2008, 06:13 PM I just wanted to give an update on my truck. I started it this morning and no problems. I drove to my buddies house and did some work on my boat and left the truck running for about 45 minutes. When I left, lots of black smoke!!! I'm no mechanic, but dosen't this sound like injector(s) going?
I brought it into the local chevy garage for them to look at and they were supost to get it in at 01:30 , but didn't get to it today because they were backed up.
I haven't had the truck for very long, but seems to have some power loss?
What do u think?
dillinghamandcheese 05-12-2008, 07:45 PM i think that when you have bad injectors you get white/blue smoke. good luck.
