: how many of you run with a spare?
TOTHEMAX! 05-11-2008, 07:25 PM im trying to figure out if i should ditch the spare or keep it. 90% of my driving is in town. if i dropped the spare i would be saving a few lbs.
guess my only concern is if i loose the spare ill probably need it. but what are the ods???
Swampfox 05-11-2008, 07:53 PM I dropped my spare but it was pretty much useless anyways to me. I've thought about finding a cheap 37 but I don't drive my truck near as much as I used to or as far as I used to.
blue duramax 05-11-2008, 08:20 PM on a stock truck keep it. I never carried a spare when I had lifted trucks, because the bigger tire wouldn't fit underneath and took up too much room in the bed.
mwswarrior 05-11-2008, 08:33 PM Have similar problems with an oversized spare. I usually keep it in the bed but put it on the roof rack when camping and traveling. I always have it one way or another.
nestlet 05-11-2008, 09:59 PM i checked my spare the other day and i think it's the original 245 that came with the truck (based on manufacture date)! hope i never need it (although is still looks like it would be ok. no signs of usage at all).
EDS_5_OH 05-11-2008, 10:19 PM I run a 255/85/16 on the original spare in the stock location. This is really close in OD to my 295/70/17's.
prohunt 05-11-2008, 10:19 PM My 37 inch spaare sits in the bed of my truck.
01Duramax6spd 05-12-2008, 12:09 AM My 33" is strapped on my flatbed or was until it go stolen   .
aka108 05-12-2008, 05:39 PM Don't move without a spare. Had one flat well into the Natl. forest in N. FL, one slow flat that showed up on my driveway and the other on I-10 by Deming, NM. Lost a half hour each time. Not a whole day.
When you put bigger tires on it point less to have a stock one under your rig, even though I do
jtaylor11 05-12-2008, 07:12 PM Ill be ditching mine as soon when the truck gets a makeover. :D
THE TECH 05-12-2008, 07:12 PM That's why I have AAA. Plus, having the spare gone means you can see the ATS diff cover really nicely!
co67b 05-12-2008, 08:38 PM Don't move without a spare. Had one flat well into the Natl. forest in N. FL, one slow flat that showed up on my driveway and the other on I-10 by Deming, NM. Lost a half hour each time. Not a whole day.
EXACTLY!
I went to 265's and got a spare to match. As soon as you ditch that working spare, you'll be kicking your butt wishing you had it. Flats don't happen for your convenience.
jawaring 05-12-2008, 09:58 PM anybody fit a 285/70/17 in place of the factory spare? I'd like to keep one and that would be the same diameter as my big wheels.
TOTHEMAX! 05-12-2008, 10:05 PM im just wondering if its worth the weight loss to take it off. trying to conserve as much fuel as possible. thought i read for every 50 lbs you drop you could gain x amount of mpg.
jtaylor11 05-12-2008, 10:13 PM Thats what I like about duallys. If ya have a flat.....take it off and run singles on the back till you can get another tire. Thats if your not towing of course.:D
JCT404 05-12-2008, 10:37 PM Staying close to home I ditch it in the garage, Long trips I throw it in the back.
Ranger22 05-12-2008, 11:04 PM Staying close to home I ditch it in the garage, Long trips I throw it in the back.

down4bmx 05-13-2008, 12:35 AM SOon as I gather up some more cash, I want to get a matching rim and tire 37" toyo Mt and 22" KMC HOSS wheels and make a tire rank in the back for it! ;)
dddonkey 05-13-2008, 02:35 AM anybody fit a 285/70/17 in place of the factory spare? I'd like to keep one and that would be the same diameter as my big wheels.

SSNIGHTMARE 05-13-2008, 08:01 AM I do but it's the wrong size
78Bronco 05-13-2008, 08:16 AM anybody fit a 285/70/17 in place of the factory spare? I'd like to keep one and that would be the same diameter as my big wheels.
I do - BFG AT 285/70/17 on an H2 wheel. It fits nicely under there.
jawaring 05-13-2008, 10:24 AM I do - BFG AT 285/70/17 on an H2 wheel. It fits nicely under there.
Ohh, perfect! Exactly what I'm working with.
StockHP 05-13-2008, 10:36 AM I ditched mine.
EDS_5_OH 05-13-2008, 11:00 AM I do - BFG AT 285/70/17 on an H2 wheel. It fits nicely under there.
A 255/85/16 will fit on the stock rim too and it's not as wide so it tucks up in there just like the stock 245 did.
RayMich 05-13-2008, 12:33 PM With my luck, if I were to ditch the spare, I would be guaranteed to get a flat soon thereafter.
I bought another tire and wheel for my spare. Now I can rotate all 5 tires and extend the overall tire life.
My LT265/75R-16 tire fits perfectly under the bed.
pa32rt 05-13-2008, 02:17 PM I "keep it on the truck". I used the one on my '98 twice. Sure was nice to have it. That's one of the main reasons I stuck with 17s on this new one. I get to keep the spare :)
Chevy1925 05-13-2008, 03:19 PM definitely keep mine. got a old 305 70 16 goodyear at/s under her now till i finish my spare tire tailgate that will have a the exact tire and wheel comb as i have on here now. should i need the spare and its a rear that blew ill just rotate the tires so the spare is on the front. may look or drive wierd but better than nothin for all the travelin i do
Duratime 05-13-2008, 03:41 PM I keep the spare, and will be buying a larger one when I buy bigger tires for the truck. I also carry a plug kit and a compressor. I have fixed more tire than I have changed, but it's nice to have both.
mule21 05-13-2008, 04:22 PM I run a 3157516 on stock wheel fits right up under there
2007.5 LMM 05-14-2008, 08:53 AM anybody fit a 285/70/17 in place of the factory spare? I'd like to keep one and that would be the same diameter as my big wheels.
I did, and I will not go anywhere without a spare....
I got a matching rim and tire 33"
See my garage.
BillB3857 05-15-2008, 05:49 PM That's why I have AAA. Plus, having the spare gone means you can see the ATS diff cover really nicely!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the inpression that AAA would only install your inflated spare if called out for flat service.
TOTHEMAX! 05-16-2008, 08:57 AM well it looks like a landslide. keep the spare on the truck.
pa32rt 05-16-2008, 10:33 AM Thats what I like about duallys. If ya have a flat.....take it off and run singles on the back till you can get another tire. Thats if your not towing of course.:D
Amen.
RayMich 05-16-2008, 01:15 PM In my opinion, any spare is better than no spare, even if it might be slightly different in size, as long as the wheel fits your bolt pattern. You can always rotate it to the front if you get a rear flat on a vehicle with a locking rear differential like the G80. If you are ever out in the "booneys" when you get a flat, you'll be glad you had a spare with you. :)
I also carry a tire repair kit and a small electric portable compressor in my truck at all times.

Ditto. Even if the sizes don't match, you can always limp it to a more favorable place for repair or to get out of a bad situation

Got my 285 up under there today, it fits but its tight! Sticks down more too but looks cool since it’s a knobby mud tire.
madmaxdmax 05-16-2008, 11:19 PM I keep the spare under my lifted truck w/35" tires for good luck....
MAX4X4 05-18-2008, 02:33 PM Joe V runs a Pro Comp A/T 33/12.50R17 on a Pro Comp #1079 17x9 under his truck.
