well was driving along, all of a sudden....BANG...clatter clatter ...REVVVVVVV....no move....figured out the flex plate grenaded, and when it did it took half the bell housing out with it, so i'm in need of a tranny and flex plate...again lol....guess i'll be doing more work on the truck than i had originally planned for this summer, but thems the breaks

ditto...i didn't use loctite, no problems yet, didn't toqrue either...just cranked the shit out of EVERYTHING

Ouch. This makes me want to go loctite my TC bolts!!!

Is this the same one that you did not loctite? How many miles before it blew?

I plan on being very liberal and generous with loc-tite when I put mine in!

do not loctite those bolts....period...you may need a torch to take them out later, and that will damage the flywheel and the torque convertor, the problem here i think was the flex plate actually self destructing, i'll iknow more when i get it apart, and it had about 15000 miles on it before it blew, but again, still haven't gotten under to figure out the issue...when i do i will update, and then you can make your assumptions after, also those bolts are SUPPOSED to be torqued...but we didn't torque them, but again i think the flexplate was weak and has now grenaded....but don't be putting loctite where there was none before

i've never used loctite on these and never had a problem. fine thread bolts don't come loose very easy. i've broken flex plates and i've broken the bolt mount on the TC and the bolts were always still done up tight

Yeah, loctite isn't really required. Even if those come loose or come out it probably wouldn't do much damage alone.

Sounds like more automatic transmission fun... I've been missing that lately... ):h

I'm just gunna use a dab on the flexplate bolts, definitely none on the TC bolts.

oh yeah....we gotta get some pictures of the carnage!

GM actually uses new flywheel - torque converter bolts which ARE precoated with their brand of Loctite. After market shops generally degrease the threads and clean on a wire wheel, then apply Loctite for installation. It is important to torque bolts to specifications. The only problem reusing bolts is if some knucklehead has over tightened the bolts past their yield point, the bolts have lost their strength and will eventually fail.

Case in point. A lady brought her car into the shop with the hub cap rattle syndrome. Examination showed one lug bolt had failed. While removing the remaining four lug nuts with a breaker bar, two other bolts sheared off. Typical result of someone using an impact wrench which is SET(?) for the right torque.

I've included a couple of pages on what manufactures are doing with critical bolt tightening. Also see locktite "DO IT RIGHT" user guide:

*Ring Ring* "Hello buddy" "Hey, get your tow strap"

That's where I became involved in this.... Then when we got under the truck "Well there's your problem" *Points to multiple dents in the inspection cover* "HOLY!!!!!..... OH MY GOD! LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THAT HOLE!"

Oh and there was also "I bet you didn't even know you lost me" "Sure I did the truck goes from full load screamin GRRRRRRRRRRRRAHAAAAAHAAAAA, to no load chuggin Duhduhduhduh" *fallowed by hysterical laughter from Blue* :D YOU JUST HAD TO BLOW THE ONE THING I DON'T HAVE! I go and pick up a 6.2 block, but no, you had to blow another tranny... :driver:

I use blue loctite every time installing a flywheel or flexplate. Use it on the torque converter bolts too.

So is that why the TC has a cover?
