I was offered 100 gallons of heating oil today for free but I don't know if I can use it because it's 3 years old. If its useable, will I have to do anything to it before I put it in my tank?

It's illegal unless your truck is licensed for farm use! Not many folks here think much of that idea either.

Are you talking your home heating tank or your truck's tank?

My trucks tank, but if its illegal like klinkerstinker says then I won't do it. The oil was probably too old to use anyway.

From what I hear home heating oil does not have the lube qualitys that reg diesel does. I would be care or add alittle bit of two stroke oil to it if you do use it.

From what I hear its the same stuff just a different color.. I use home heating/off road in my tractors and construction equipment and never had any problems. I also use it in a cat "Farm Truck" and never had any issues. Im my opinion its exactly the same except for color.. its NOT the same as ULSD thou. so you cant use it if you have a newer truck.. I dont see any purpose of using 2 stroke oil in anything except my lawn boy or weed wacker..
Just my 2 cent worth...

Home heating oil does not have road tax added when purchased which is why it's illegal to use on the road.

Its a big fine if you get caught with home heating oil in your tank.. unless you have FARM TRUCK PLATES..:mad:

Heating oil (or offroad diesel) has 500 ppm or less of sulfur meaning it has more lubrication than USLD (15 ppm) that we fill or trucks with now. But as old as that stuff is it might be over 500 ppm which could possibly clog the fuel filters in a dmax (dont ask how i know) Just to clear things up off road use to be ove 500ppm and on road was 500ppm or less but regardless its still illegal to use it so it would probaly be best not to risk it.

I have used "Offroad/HHO" in emergencies when in the field not paying attention to the fuel gauge and it will not harm your engine. It is #2 with red dye and not road tax. To date I have nto seen many trucks get pulled over and dipped. Matter of fact I have only seen it at Farm Shows. You can burn it without fear of damage, but you will only need to look over your shoulder. If you can live with the worry, then you can burn it. Like I stated, I have burned it in the past and just a few weeks ago, I just dont run hard until I have filled up a few times so I dont get in trouble. I get better fuel economy for a few tanks after I run red!

unless your using your truck for commercial use, they will alomost 100% likely, never check your fuel tank to see what kind of fuel you are running. First of all, if they are gonna check your tank, they need to pull you over, and they need a reason to do that. So if you don't do anything to draw attention to yourself that warrants pulling you over for, you should be fine. I've been pulled over a total of 6 times since I bought my truck. (5 were after the six gun was installed....weird, huh?) Not one of those times did the officer question me about what kind of fuel I was using. So I say, use whats cheaper.

If I may add to this....

Unless you're a commercial truck they'll either need your permission, probable cause OR a search warrant to dip your tank - END OF STORY. Checking the contents of your fuel tank is a SEARCH of your personal vehicle and all the rules governing the search of motor vehicles is in force. Commercial vehicles can be searched at any time and for any reason but NOT private vehicles (no matter what state you're in). So unless you allow your tank to be dipped or they produce a search warrant just say "no, you may not search my tank" if they ask.

I wouldn't be afraid to run heating oil in my truck if it was a 6.5 or a 6.2 diesel only goes bad when it grows algee it will lose its sent and color but it wont go bad we have diesel in 55 gal. drums from '98 that we use in the tractor and we haven't had a problem yet.

I'd burn it but not all at once. Maybe 1/2 tanks.
