: Surveillance Switch for Lighting

I had the chance to check out the front seat of a 9C1 Marked Police Package Impala, sure beats being in the back seat. While there, I noticed a "Surveillance" switch. To quote the GM Fleet website:

http://www.gmfleet.com/us/products/specialized/police/impala9c1/

A Surveillance Mode Switch (SURV) is located in the instrument panel to the left of the steering column. When the SURV button is pressed in, all automatic exterior and interior lighting functions are disabled. Pressing the button again activates these lighting functions. All lighting functions can be activated manually if necessary.

In daylight, the daytime running lamps (DRL) are off and the transaxel shift indicator (PRNDL) and clock/radio are at minimum intensity. At nighttime the automatic lamp control (ALC) is disabled: exterior lamps, interior instrument displays and dome lamp are off and the PRNDL, clock/radio displays are at minimum intensity.

Is there any way to wire in such a function on the 2500HD that would offer the same single button operation? The Police Package Tahoe doesn't seem to come with the option.

I know when they replaced the ECM in the impala that i am issued that they had to reprogram the ECM to make the button work again....because they programmed the ECM for a regular impala. Then after they programmed it the interior lights did not function when the doors opened...so they had to reprogram it again. So, it looks to me like it would take a switch and some programming of the ECM, which I doubt they have a program written to do such a thing on a silverado.

You don't want to know how I know this, BUT YOU DO NOT WANT TO GET PULLED OVER FOR ANYTHING AND HAVE A POLICE OFFICER SEE, FIND, OR KNOW THAT TYPE OF SWITCH EVEN EXISTS IN A PRIVATE VEHICLE!!!!! :badidea:

Hmmm, to me the most important aspect would be the ability to disable the exterior lights (ie. auto-headlights, DRL, and brake lights). If you want to go incognito you could turn off the headlights with the normal switch which would kill all interior lights and leave your auto-headlights, DRL, and brake lights working. Pressing the / a button, if wired to do so, would kill those, providing cover of darkness stealth.

To make this mod a true "stealth-mod" you could get one of these http://www.jpcustoms.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=16194&cat=289&page=1

Hmm, the more I think about this the more I like it.

I'm not sure what exactly would be "illegal" about this switch...it basically doesn't do anything you can't do through the manipulation of the current switches.

BTW, with the switch, at least in my impala, the brake lamps are not disabled by the switch. They still work as normal.

Yeah, but that is no fun if the brake lights still work - that gives you away. :)

Guess that's what my problem was, we disabled EVERYTHING!!! No brake lights, running lights, headlights, etc., etc., Totally dark vehicle.

I'd hoped it wasn't PCM-related. The concept seems so simple, but the application might be something else. Was hoping for a simple relay addition.

Any other ideas?

Canadian vehicles have a manditory DRL. I too am hoping someone can explain an easy way to disable all the lights (except brake) so I can hunt moose in stealth mode.

I thought of buying an American headlight switch but I'm confident that I'm not the only Canuck with this problem.

I have this functionality via a dash switch - one of twenty on my dash panel. There is also a switch that only kills brake lights and one that only kills brake, backup, tail and clearance. The "kill all" uses the equivalent of a five pole relay. Lots of wires. Don't forget the backup lights, which go on when shifting from park to drive. Indicator lights are needed to assure that you aren't driving around unknowingly with a kill switch engaged.

I also live in Canada, and would be happy if the lights would go off when I use the emergency/park brake like my 02 does. I hate being hooked up to my horse trailer turning on the key and truck and trailer light up like a christmas tree. I don't need the lights until I'm ready to roll.

In my younger days, high school and shortly thereafter, 1984 ish, there were a lot of us with hopped up cars. Did a lot of drag racing and some street racing (not a good idea anymore). But one advantage was to disable ALL lights so whoever was following you did not have the advantage of seeing lights or brake lights, etc., and get an advantage on you. So kill all the lights. Bunch of us speeding home real late one night and cop pulled out behind us. We split up and he picked me. 100+ mph and could not shake him at first, head for the hills and farms and back roads where I have an advantage. Got a little distance on him over a hill and killed all the lights and ducked in behind a barn. He flew by, never saw us. We waited for about 15 -20 minutes and decided to head back to John's house and put my car in his dad's garage for the night. NOTE TO SELF: his dad is a PA trooper! John gets out and starts to open garage door and all types of lights and sirens started going off. Yup, his dad was WAS supposed to be off that night got called in. Oh pooh, we out ran his dad and he was p**sed! Made all of us pull the switches out that night. It was fun, there were about 10-15 cars in his driveway for the night and everyone yanking wires out. Not pretty! He left us go, but lesson learned. Funny that I think about it these days though. Ah, the stuff we used to get away with.

Today, as best I know, that type of stuff can be construed as impersonating a police officer or government official and the penalties are not good. And with the 911 etc., stuff happening, I am not sure I would want to risk it. I understand why guys would want to do it though. But I still say:badidea:
