Let's say that I want to run my Dmax at the limit of the stock charger, and lets assume that limit is 500 rwhp, and that power is acheived with some form of custom tuning, ie EFI Live. Eventually I would like to have someone go through the motor and really beef up the components, pistons, rods, anything that tends to fail under high HP conditons, go with a bigger turbo and shoot for 750 to 800 rwhp.
If I was to have Mike L go through my tranny, would it be best to go with a SCIII for now, considering I plan to beat on it with the 500 hp idea for at least five years, and then have the ally rebuilt with a SCIV when I really push the power with the freshened up motor? Or should I just get the SCIV now and assume it will last though the 5ish years of abuse/work at the 500 hp level and still be going strong with the new engine pushing 750 to 800 hp?
Thanks
Eric

Why do a SCIII when you already know for sure that you will eventually go bigger? Just buy a SCIV or SCV.

X2... If you know your going to go bigger, go ahead and get something that can handle the power now.

He said he is refreshing it when the time comes to make more power. So why spend the extra now??
Just get the sc 3 for now.

I guess the bigger question is if I have a SCIV put in, and run a 500 hp tune for some time (ie 5 years) and then go really big with the power will the 5 year old build still hold like its new, or am I pushing power though a tired transmission. That may only last a year or two until I have to freshen up the ally again, as opposed to just doing a rebuild at the same time I go through the motor?

It depends on what you did with the Alli during that time. You will be refreshing the C3's if you played hard.

Assume that I routinely pull 12K - 15K, hard, (assuming I can keep EGT in check). Some stop light to stop light horsing around. No sled pulling, no hot lap 1/4 racing. Watcha think? Thanks Mike... and remember that I will be asking you to build the tranny both times, so I know that will factor into the reliability equation.

Is it possible to over do it? What happens if you go with a IV when you only need a III?

In the case of a built transmission you can't over do it. It like having too much money, in a purely empirical sense. In having a stronger tranny than you need, its something that you will never have to worry about. And in the long term you will probably get more longevity out of an SCIV that you only put mild power into.

If I am not mistaken..... Mike/McRat limped a SCIII around 525-535hp.. If your gonna beat on it as YOU know YOU are, get the SCIV... especially if your beating on it with a 500hp tune. for up to 5 years.. efi soon for me with the 500...
