Hi, I found several restaurants that are more than happy to let me take their oil from their holding tanks out back.

I've seen a number of different 12V pumps. Now I'm not stupid enough to buy the $39.95 pump I've seen around. But which pump will get the job done for me? I've seen these on ebay for $72.95 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Biodiesel-Pump-12V-12-V-fuel-oil-diesel-transfer-WVO_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6755QQihZ022QQitemZ 350056464622QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW).

I've also seen this one at Harbor Freight for $150 (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=4097)

And then there's the one at Northern Tool for $100 (http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=6970&langId=-1&catalogId=4006970&PHOTOS=on&productId=47671&categoryId=0)

Any opinions on either of these would be appreciated. Or if you know of another one that works well.

This is illeagal, Unless the Resturant OWNS the dumpster, If it has a rendering plant name on the side,, becareful,, As Once its placed in their dumpster, it is theirs,, and you could be busted for Stealing oil, A better soulution, is to get some 35 Gallon open drum steel containers, and have them put the oil in YOUR container, Save your self some headaches,, or have them put it back in the containers they get it in, and it'll be easier for you to handle, and you won't need a pump. If you want to do 55 gal drums,, and leave them there for like 3 or 4 weeks at a time,, then use this, http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=47591
to pick up drums with, it was 199 at my local store last week.

I agree with Pruitt but I'm guilty as well. Several restaurant owners are really into what I'm doing and are all for it. They would rather I take the oil from the dumpsters in place.

The biggest issue I'm seeing that restaurant owners have is they are worried if they fire they're rendering company and commit to a private pick-up that we'll get tired of making bio and just stop picking up they're oil.

Try to get in good with someone in the kitchen as well, leave them some carboys, 10-15 gallons worth, and when they're full they can dump the rest in the rendorers dumpster. That's what I do now. Also if you tell restaurant owners (especially female) that your making soap with the waste oil then they're really interested in you picking it up. I've brought them some soap and they're blown away by it.

I wouldn't do the 12v pumps at all. I use a gas powered trash pump and it works amazing. Look for a used one and if it's in good shape you won't be sorry.

I agree. I've tried any number of 12 volt pumps for transferring large quantities of oil, and none have been satisfactory.

I also agree with the first 2 responses above. Rendering companies are getting very serious about protecting their oil and will prosecute you if they catch you taking it. Once the oil is dumped into that dumpster, the restaurant no longer has a claim to it so it doesn't matter what they say.

I always had good luck providing metal 5 gallon cans to the restaurant, so they could just empty the hot oil directly into the cans. Then when the cans were full they'd give me a call, or we'd simply be on a schedule, and I could bring empties and pick up the full ones. It was easier for the restaurant since they didn't have to carry oil out to a dumpster, and easier for me to deal with 5 gallon quantities at a time. The only problem I ran into was one restaurant whose fryers were too short to have room for the can under the spigot, so that didn't work out as well.

I certainly have no intention of dipping into a company's collection container. But I am looking for a pump to pump stuff out of a drum into one in my truck. I do have electricity in my truck (3000/6000 watt inverter).

So any good pump recommendations would be appreciated. I just didn't want to spend $350 for the one I've seen on ebay if I can avoid it.

use a old air conditioner compressor or any 110V refrigeration compressor 1/2 to 2 HP.
hook the suction line of the compressor to the top of a drum. Also put a 1 to 2 inch line to draw out the oil in top of the drum. Seal the drum, start the compressor and pull a vacuum on the drum and the oil draws out easily and quietly.
