Hey Guys,
I tried to replace my crankshaft pulley and got stopped at the fan. How do a remove the clutch fan? Whenever I try and unbolt the fan it just turns. Also, is there a special technique for loosening the bolts on the crankshaft pulley, without turn the crankshaft in the process?
Thanks,
John

your just removing the 4 ½" nuts that hold it down right? Try holding pressure on the belt near the alternator, lock the pulley in place with a ratchet on the alt as well.

I just buzz the pulley bolts out with an impact wrench. After removing the pulley, I use an impact wrench to take the center bolt out of the crankshaft. Then use a puller on the vibration dampner.
If you don't have access to an impact wrench, you'll have to hold the crankshaft. You could try putting a pinchbar or screwdriver through the hole in the bottom of the flywheel cover to wedge the flywheel/flexplate. If all else fails, pull the flywheel cover, engage a tooth on the flywheel and wedge the tool against the edge of the block.

leave belt on or back of flat wrench between to nuts and hub ( nuts that you are not trying to turn), lossen all nuts than remove
I didn't remove the fan when I replaced the pulley. I removed the accessory belt and unbolted the pulley from under the vehicle and dropped the pulley out of the bottom of the truck. Hope this saves you some work.

You know what he's right, I forgot all about that, all I had to do when I changed mine was take the belt off the tensioner, remove the skid plate and change it from underneath, don't need to take the fan out at all.

Hey Everyone, <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I just finished my install last night, however I am not sure what the torque setting should be. My book said 200 ft/lbs, but I think that is for the harmonic balancer and not the pulley. I torque it to about 100 ft/lbs. What is the correct torque setting?

IIRC it is 90 ftlb. I don't find it much trouble to remove the shroud, clutch fan and pulley from above. I tried from below and gave up.

I've removed it from the top and from the bottom. I think it's easier to remove the fan and do it from the top.

I removed it from the bottom. I first attempted the top but gave up. The bottom was much easier. However I still had to remove the fan shroud.
