I see a few tractors with old car tires on the front, is there a reason or is the farmer just cheap? One guy I know bought a brand spankin new newholland and about 1 week later it had old car tires up front.

It is cheaper when you used old truck tires. Plus they are a little easer on hay fields but not much in the mud. But we normally at least wear out the set of tires that came on the tractor before changing them out.

Some will use a steel belted tire instead of the bias tractor tires on count of thorns in prairie hay meadows. A little harder for a thorn to puncture a steel belted 10ply truck tire.

We use golf carts in the grapes and have this problem. For some reason the tires would go flat but I couldnt see anything. The tire center said they were full of thorns. We have wild rose bushes next to tree lines.

x2 on the ruts, neighbor had them on his tractor, just made it hard to get the tractor to turn when plowing sometimes. had to just step on one of the cutting brakes is all.

For us it's thrifty. Used truck tires that you have sitting around are a lot cheaper then buying something new or used.

My brother-in-law has an old Minneapolis that someone must of snapped the axle on a long time ago. They took the entire front axle out of a pretty large truck. I would guess a couple ton. They welded the axle right to the tractor frame and then just welded up some tie rods and snipped the brake lines, and off they went. It actually works very well. The only thing I don't like is the axle has the old split rims. Those things scare me. :)

I've seen it alot. Usually around here it's just cause you have an old set of tires laying around and your tractor needs some new skins to keep afloat.
Same with anything on the farm, if it holds air than it works. If it's cheap it's perfect!

I have 34 golf carts at our golf course,do yourself a favor and load all 4 golf cart tires with a heavy dose of slime, you wont have to deal with flats again, and if you do,you can bet the tire is trashed anyway. Tire sealer is a godsend to us,without it we would be dealing with flats every day of the week ,when it drys out in the summer,or on the cart paths, the golf tees go right thru the tires all the time. Same deal with my tri plex tee mowers, they run over broekn tees all day,and the slime makes it a non issue, just keep going.:D

We found regular tractor tires wear off very fast in alfalfa stubble working in hay field and tried racing slicks on fronts and guess what less damage to hay and field and they slide right over what they are on and last a long time. Just have to drive with caution until you learn how the front works, so a little side brake action makes it go too. You know the drill. Good luck...

I use them to avoid flats when brushogging.Ribbed tractor tires would have catastrophic failures,if you ran over a sharp stump.

I put a set of Michelin XPS Ribs, size 7.50R16 on a 3910 because I was sick and tired of having to fix a flat tire everytime I wanted to use the tractor. I took those fabric rag farm tires off there, put those all steel Michelin's on there, and I have not had one flat in 6 years they have been on there. That is why I do it, for the durability.

Key is cheap, on hand and holds air.

Used LT truck tires on tractors and wagons. Try putting 300bu of corn on LT truck tires :eek:
