Hey Guys

I have a thump from the front right tire when I go over a bump and it seems to be worse if I have the brakes applied. I have replace both from hubs (thump was there before new hub) and both front shocks and it is still there. I have checked the brakes and it is all tight and the pad sliders are in place. I am thinking in is a bushing some where on maybe the sway bar or UCA or torsion bar? Not sure? Any ideas?

Thanks

have you checked your ball joints? tie rod ends?

I'm leaning towards the control arm bushings myself. But they usually make a popping sound from what I remember. Been awhile since I replaced one.

Also check your Idler arm mine broke the other night when i was sled pulling and on the way home i noticed that the steering wheel had more play than useal and it had a knocking sound to so maybe that will help you in your search for the unknown thump your hearing

I've got the exact same problem ever since I put my lift on and can not find what it is for the life of me. I put lift on a year ago and it's done it since and drives me crazy. I've had it back to the shop a couple times to try and find out what it is but no luck. I would love for someone to point me in the right direction also.

The inner fenderwells (the plastic one) were bumping on my A-arms for a while and I couldn't figure it out.I could really hear the clunk going down the highway every time I hit a dip or bump!Tucked it in closer to the frame and no more noise.

Check the crossmember where the rear of the torsion bars are attached. IIRC, they are bushed to the main frame and I've seen 'em "unbushed" on a couple GMs. It was usually on S-10s.

Tie rode have less than 10000 miles on them so I think it might be control arm bushings or ball joints( have noticed that it will just shoot one way or the other when you are not watching so I think ball joints). That gives somewhere to start at least.

Thanks guys

I was just told that the Chevy trucks can see ball joint wear as early as 60,000. I have 90,000 and I'm putting in a lift, so will do the ball joints too. Just ordered the Extreme Series ball joint made by McQuay-Norris (FA2164E upper and FA2167E lower). Mine doesn't make any noise, but it'll practically change lanes if I hit a good rut. I've ordered the heavy duty tie rods and the Cognito steering support too. Brakes and steering are two things I don't play games with.

Only one tierod since the '99 and newer body style, never a ball joint, ever on a '99 and newer, or any other steering part for that matter (ISS's don't count). And we BEAT 'EM. A wheel hub here and there, though, but I'm not sure if that's considered a steering or suspension part? Never an idler or pitman arm, draglink, or steering box.

I have seen shocks make a thud when going over a bump like you describe. I had a friend that had new shocks put on and it was making a thud noise, the mechanic couldn't figure it out. I had him jump up and down on the truck and I could feel the thud in the shock tube. They replaced the one shock and the problem solved. The mechanic said that he had never seen that before. Good Luck

It was there before the Bilstiens went on her and I also have noticed that the thumping is worse when the wheels are turned either way. I am leaning towards ball joints and when I get home from work that is where I am going to start.

Thanks for all you help guys I appreciate it!!!

Well whole new front end on it and still the the thump New Shocks, ball joints, idler and pitman arm, wheel hubs, and tie rods. What next? Loose cab mount? Loose motor mount? I am out of ideas here?

Bushings at (in) the crossmember for the rear of the torsion bars.

I bet its the control arm bushings, it wouldn't hurt to replace them anyways. If anything just put the OEM ones back in.

could it be the CV joints? just throwing that out there. since you said you replaced ALL of the suspension parts. The next on the list would be anything else in that area that moves. Hence, CV Joints.

Are we poss missing the famous steering shaft and lower column bushing?
On the oilfield roads my noise was worse on turns...
If so and she's under warrantly let gm pay for it then put the 2 dollar hose clamp around the column just behind the bushing to keep it cured...

Em-Mwd-LWD-Mud Pulse? Who do you work for?

You're so right. I think that most everybody has already done this upgrade and we forget that not all trucks were done! When mine went, it was worse in the turns and made a clunk sound that made me nervous to drive it!

Was there a recall on this steering shaft issue?
