So customer brings his '04 5500 LLY, no power, won't rev over 2000 rpm.

first though, you knuckle head, the PTO switch is on, nope switch off.

No MIL on dash, plug in the T2, ahh, P1093, pull out the fuel pressure gauge, sure enough, pulling 12" at idle.

Spin off the old filter, pull the WIF expecting to find a load of trash/crud, none found, just a little evidence of water.

Spin on a new filter, prime and we are good to go, draw is now down to 2" if that.

The filter I took off was a new design Delco, I had installed it ~6500 miles previous. (replaced with same)

The Question,

Are these newer filters THAT much better that it would have restricted that quick ? Would water have caused the filter to restrict ? ( and if so, why didn't the WIF light trip ?)

My personal theory, knowing that this customer is filling his trucks from his own onsite bulk tank, is that he is gettin trash from said tank ( he was advised to change / install filter on his tank if this is the case )

The customers question to me was why was this the only truck to have this issue ( 6 trucks, this is his only D'max ) My explination was that the newer filters may filter better, or he may have just sucked up some trash somewhere.

What are the rest of Y'alls experiances with this ?

Kevin, cut it open. I have noticed that these seem to run a bit higher restriction then the previous units. But no more then my OEM/MEGA combo pulls

Hoot's avatar almost says it correctly.....It should read damn "dirty" diesel!

Voodoo... your customer could have gotten a bad case/dose of microbial growth. I took a hit a couple of years ago and like too have never got all that "she-at" out of the system. I went through 2 filters in about 500 miles, completely clogged with slime.

If it is the microbial crud, why is it only effecting this one truck ? he has this one GM product, the rest are International and Ford, one being a 6.0 Powersmoke.

I had sort of wondered about the crud later in the day Friday when one of my co-workers was working on his own truck ( old chevy with 6.2 ) wouldn't run for crap,
He dropped the tank and the pickup sock was coated with slime.

I still have the filter, Monday I'll try to get time and open it up, see what gives.

Whats this Killem stuff you refer to Dmax ?

Killem?
Microbial Growth Killers, they have several names, killem, biocide, bioclean.....

Problem is after you kill the goo-balls, they turn to slime and still require more filtration. They tell me the costal areas are the worst.
ON EDIT--It's easiest to pump out a sample from the tank and just look for translucent snot balls.

ok, cut the filter open today, ( sorry no pix, wife took camera to daycare for the kids first Valentines day )

Anyway, cut the filter, nothing on the housing, no rust, no slime or crud. The filter media was a dark purple color, thru and thru, cut a ribbon out of the first layer and observed that the second layer of media just the outter edges were purple, the inner pleats were still white.

I guess I'll wait and see how soon this truck comes back. If it is the slime, he'll have issues with his other trucks soon enough I figure.

I read this forum often, don't post much only when I got something of interest or an oddity.

BTW, how many of you get to play with the 7.8L Dmax?

I should post pics of the filter I cut open that was a couple of weeks old. No sign of water, rust, or anything else, slight discoloration was all.

But it was not working. Engine was throwing 1093's constantly. Replacing it with another "new design" filter fixed the problem. Dunno.

I have been playing with one (7.8) in a 2001 WT5500 with Aisin 6spd trans. have very little knowledge of the engine and it's workings, just what I can dig up on SI ( and that was a quiz in itself).

Is common rail, this particular truck seems to have a little corrosion on the connector pins for the Pressure Control Valve one ( mounted on injection pump )

Got it running without tossin codes and shutting down, man, this dude has got some hoss behind it. VERY smooth, and reletivly quiet. ( compared to the CAT 3126/C7 )

This truck is a cab over with roll back deck on chassis. it moves down the road well, good power up to 2900 rpm, when 'puter defuels ( knocks pressure from 17k psi back to 8k psi ) shift and go again. hit 75 mph fairly easily and quickly.

Someday my dealer will think enough of me to send me to school, someday......
