: Small chunk out of sidewall, ok?
sherr20 04-30-2008, 10:02 PM I have Bridgestone Revo 235/85/16's, my front right has a small "gouge" 1/8" deep by barely a 1/4" long in the sidewall. It is pretty much mid sidewall, no cords or anything showing, just black rubber. Should be ok right?
I am leaving Saturday on a big RV trip. Tires have 1200 miles on them.
I couldnt get a picture tonight, so if I have to I'll attach tomorrow.
blue duramax 04-30-2008, 10:05 PM As long as no cords are cut,and there is no bulge you should be ok. But without seeing it can't be 100% sure.
joverman 05-01-2008, 01:15 PM Having the tire cut on the sidewall will weaken the tire's ability to flex when it has a big load put on it and it will probably blow out. I wouldn't chance it, if it were me I would either pay for a new tire or go where you got them and see if there is any warranty to get the tire replaced.
sherr20 05-01-2008, 09:25 PM Here is the picture. It is closer to the tread in the thicker are of the sidewall. It is 3/32" deep at the deepest part of "V" no cord just black rubber like I said before. No bulges, nothing, I'm not sure how long it has been like this.
Jasondt2001 05-01-2008, 09:29 PM I wouldnt even think about driving that farther than the tire store honestly. Since you're leaving I'd be on the phone begging for overnight orders at the local tire shops.
Tires get real warm and expand and then you park them and they cool, all that expansion and contraction can really be heck on a set of good tires, much less one with a chunk missing.
madmaxdmax 05-01-2008, 09:32 PM X2...better safe than sorry. I wouldn't chance it either. My toyhauler had UV cracks in the sidewall and it made me nervous enough to replace it before my last outing. Replace that tire...and keep it as another spare. Just my 2cents
sherr20 05-01-2008, 09:44 PM Yeah, think I am going to get a new one tomorrow and use this one as a spare. I would worry the whole time.
Jasondt2001 05-01-2008, 09:46 PM I would worry the whole time.
That's exactly what I do also, then I don't have any fun on the trip I'm to busy always looking for a tire shop to save my bacon if needed. You'll have a better time with all strings tied up before you hit the road.
sherr20 05-01-2008, 10:05 PM Finding one tomorrow will be the problem. I am on military leave and really cannot delay departure.
blue duramax 05-01-2008, 10:06 PM Now that I can see it,I would say don't use it. If it is 3/32 it would have to be into the cords.
Jasondt2001 05-01-2008, 10:07 PM Why don't you use your spare tire and then get it fixed when you get back/when you can?
sherr20 05-01-2008, 10:15 PM Right now my spare is the stock size, I hadnt upgraded yet. So I need to put a 235/85/16 back on. There is a chance Discount Tire, one of theiir many dealers within a reasonable distance will have one, or Firestone dealers.
Jasondt2001 05-01-2008, 10:16 PM ohhhh, ouch :(
sherr20 05-01-2008, 10:42 PM my other option is buy another brand in same size, Michelin LTX?MS are in stock. Might have to buy two so they are on the same axle. I do not rotate front to rear anyway as my Alcoa wheels don't allow that.
sherr20 05-02-2008, 12:43 PM Well I found a matching tire an hour away this morning and had it replaced and back home by 11am. I put the one with the gouge on the spare, so atleast my spare is the same size now. The Firestone dealer said it was more superficial, I asked if it would be replaced if I had the roadhazard warranty, they said no, not bad enough, I replaced it anyway for peace of mind.
RayMich 05-02-2008, 12:59 PM Here is the picture. It is closer to the tread in the thicker are of the sidewall. It is 3/32" deep at the deepest part of "V" no cord just black rubber like I said before. No bulges, nothing, I'm not sure how long it has been like this.
I would NOT take any chances with that tire. Although there is a slight possibility that it may hold, I wouldn't want to take a chance with my life or anyone else's on that tire.
Hopefully you got road hazzard policy with it when you bought it, so I would try to get the dealer to replace it under their road hazzard policy.
Good luck.
ON EDIT: Looking at it again, it looks like a manufacturing defect, so I would definitely ask for a replacement tire.
