Hi, newbie here, looking to buy. Any of you purchase outside the state, and bring in CA? What did you have to go through, besides paying taxes?
do you have to smog diesels? are they all california emissions?

They are not all california emissions. If you are buying brand new from outside the state it must be ca emissions certified. If you are buying used, I believe it must have at least 7500 miles. This is for a vehicle with non ca emissions.

Well a couple of years back, I bought my father-inlaws truck from AZ and brought it to CA. Got it smog but thought I remember that I didnt have to after all...could be wrong. But we had to pay this high $ fee since it was from out of state. Then some law went through later and got the $ back from the DMV.
BTW, found this for you: "
Existing law imposes a use tax on a vehicle purchased outside of California and brought into California within 90 days of purchase. New legislation effective October 1, 2004 through July 1, 2006 requires payment of use tax on a vehicle purchased outside California and brought into California with 365 days of the purchase date. "
Just call the DMV or check their site.

Our DMV directives require it to have CA emission statement on the eng or emission component if you are an established CA resident. If a non resident moving into CA, brings in a vehicle w/o the necessary CA certifications then it must have at least (a specified number of miles ~ I don't recall what it is at this moment). I'm thinking this is to deter fraud/conspiracy on our part as CA residents. Also thinking our dealerships were behind the development of these policies. There are exceptions like military personnel relocations etc Its spelled out in the DMV directives.
As a CA resident, I purchased my CA emissioned truck new in ID. They gave me a 30 day temp permit IIRC and I had to pay the fees/taxes etc within 30days, including getting a weight certificate (guess the manufacturers data wasn't sufficient ~ but in honesty, one could add a lot of options within those 30days allowed to register that would excede certain fee thresholds).
HOWEVER, not all DMV offices/clerks are proficient in the policies and some/many may have gotten thru ~ but the few that haven't had a nightmare on their hands ~ as the offending vehicle must be moved outside the state immediately and a movement permit (fee) acquired to do so. I recommend taking the safe road.

The replies above are correct, the vehicle has to essentially be equipped with Calif emissions if new (read the states definition of new).
Read for yourself at the CA DMV website:

Shumdit and I got our trucks from the same Idaho dealer, Dave Smith. My truck was ordered by the dealer knowing it had to comply with CA emmissions requirements, so it had the necessary equipment and stickers. Pretty straight forward project.

A "used" vehicle brought into CA will also need to be smoged. When they load the VIN into the machine and it will come up as a FED smog. That will be the standard to meet. Been-there-done-that.
No smog for diesels, just stickers.
