: Turning off TAPS to keep "Aggressive" shifting

So I've read plenty of times that if you baby the Allison it learns to shift like a grandma, and if you run it hard it shifts how, well, how I want it lol. Well I remember in EFI Live you can turn off the upshift and downshift taps learning. So this is my question. If you went out for a day or two and drove it like a bat out of hell, then turned off the taps learning, would it stay shifting aggressivly? And then maybe like each month turn the learning back on and drive it like mad again to make shure its shifting how it wants. I'm an old school sorta person as I love my older trucks with their "noticable" shift kits. :D

the trans is always learning. you ran re-set taps if you would like, but theres no way around them really. my suggestion is to call guy tripp @ socal diesel and order a TCM from an 01. he tweaks some things in them, and they are a "dumb" TCM meaning they dont try to re-learn quite as much as the newer ones. Contact him and he will get you all squared away.

I've wondered this same thing. Bummer no one seems to have a way to "stop" the learning of the trans. I'd love to reset the taps, beat the crap out of it for 100 shifts, and then turn off the learning to lock in a firm shift pattern.

Hmm I'll have to give Guy a call. Have a Suncoast IV shipping in the mail here and want to get everything squared away at once. Would turning those two parameters off in EFI Live do anything then?

you dont turn them off. when you check clear taps it clears the taps, but they immediately start to go into fast learn at that point.

No there's two selections in the TCM that say UPSHIFT TAPS LEARNING and DOWNSHIFT TAPS LEARNING. Don't know what numbers they are as I'm at work now but the selections are ENABLE and DISABLE. I saw they were on enable so I got the theory that if I turn it to disable then it would stop learning from that point on.

I've heard that you can go to the dealer and have an 01' operating system (4 the tranny) put in place of your current system and there will be no TAPS. you will loose the overdrive cut-out option but supposedly it's that simple. I have the same problem with my 04' and the way the tranny learns. I'm gonna try that 01' system and see what happens

Good luck getting a dealer to change the OS on your TCM. All Allison 1000's use adaptive learn, EFILive can be used to disable adaptive learn on 01-05 5 speeds via the following tables.

D5053 Upshift adaptive learn enable
D5054 Kickdown adaptive learn enable

I'm a service tech at a GM dealer. Can flash any vehicle with anything I want lol. And those are the exact tables I was talking about.

I believe you can only flash what GM gives you. I don't think you can flash an '01 OS in an '03 and later.

Yeah these are all off of the GM SPS website. The hard part is you have to track a VIN down for an '01. But I'll have to try it so I can say right here it can or can't be done.

I have what you have and can't do it. EFI can.

I would go with the streefighter TCM from guy. He doesnt charge much, and if thats what hes doing for TCM tuning its probably the best way. Guy wouldnt offer it if it wasnt the best and easiest solution.

I love when a problem gets solved without me having to even get up. Thanks for all your input :beerchug:

Mike. Just to clear it up. What would we use D5053 and D5054 for then?

If you load a '01 VIN in to SPS you can flash any 2001 - 2004 Allison TCM controller to the '01 program if you like. It's easy and any dealership or repair facility with SPS can do it if you know how. PM me if you want to know how to do it.
