: Water injection to boost MPG
oil pan 4 04-29-2008, 12:42 AM I looked over all the threads to see if this had been talked about before and didn't see any thing.
Does any one know if straight water injection can increase fuel economy?
I can see how Water/Methanol could, only problem is methanol costs more then the diesel fuel it would be replacing.
At high way speeds I waste a lot of heat, EGT's are over 800'F most of the time.

Ummm... no. Water/meth is easiest found in the form of windshield washer fluid. Last time I checked, the expensive stuff was $1.69 a gallon; everyday stuff was about a buck a gallon (or less). How's that more expensive than diesel (currently over $4 a gallon)?
oil pan 4 04-29-2008, 02:59 PM Any idea what the mixture ratio is in that stuff?

IIRC, the WalMart SuperTech -25 degrees stuff is 38% methanol.
uao85 04-30-2008, 09:46 AM doesnt that stuff also have detergents or soaps in it though?

Not that stuff... according to Dan Labonte. I figure he should know...
uao85 04-30-2008, 03:41 PM hmmm that is good to know for somebody looking for cheap meth/water injection. Thanks bud.

Labonte MotorSp 04-30-2008, 05:14 PM Walmart super tech is good stuff.

The thing that stinks is Wally World here in Georgetown doesn't seem to carry it anymore. Then again... I don't have my system yet either... so it's only a theoretical :banghead:...
Shaman 04-30-2008, 09:26 PM Give in a shake before you buy it. IF you get bubbles that don't dissipate, it should work. You can also take it home and boil it off and see what is left behind.
Also, a guy on TDiClub is running a Devil's Own Kit, and has posted some info. His name is turbobooster

oil pan 4 05-01-2008, 11:53 AM Now we are getting some where.
Thanks for all that stuff, form the sources of premix water meth (I didn't have any idea you got that much for your money) to the mix charts and the tdi forum link.
So it looks like water with some methanol really does do some thing worth looking into.
A little bit if soap couldn't hurt, it might help clean things out a bit.
Due to the high price of fuel maybe we could do a sticky on this topic?
I searched here for threads about this, didn't find any then looked over all the thread titles in this section and didn't find any thing.

I would recommend you not run soap. When I cooked the soapy WWF, there was quite a bit of residue. It can also foam if you aren't careful, and you don't want to spit suds when you should be spitting water/alcohol on that big hill. I have a fluid transfer pump setup to pump my old WWF for the car. its the soapy kind. There is about 2/3 fluid and 1/3 bubbles when I use it.
Why not just buy 100% mentnal and mix it your self
Shaman 05-01-2008, 07:23 PM Why not just buy 100% methanol and mix it your self
May be different for others, but for me, Methanol is $3 for 500mL. In the best mix I have found 45% of 2L of WWF is $1.80. 45% of 2L is almost a liter, for $1.80. Understand this is in Japan, but I think that the numbers might not be too different.
oil pan 4 05-02-2008, 12:47 AM Looks like WWF is the cheapest source of methanol if your looking to mix it with water any way.
No soap, got it.
