Okay guys, looking for some input here. I just got a new '05 Duramax 2 days ago--my 1st diesel:D I've got some questions...Everything I've been told by the dealers says I can't put bigger tires on my truck because of the Allison, but looking at this board, I know that's not right. So, if I get one of these Hyper Tech's, Superchips, or Predator's, will that let me "re-program" my trans. to compensate for bigger tires? (I'm wanting to go with 285's) I like the fact that these also give you a HP boost and help with fuel mileage.
I want to raise the truck no more than 1-3" and level the front end with the rear--what's the best way to do this?
I don't haul heavy loads very often, mainly duck boats or 16' trailers with 4 wheelers, but every now and then I'll be towing something over 7500 lbs.
Suggestions please. Thanks.

I have 285's. Crank the torsion bars 4 turns. Nothing will rub and ride will not be any stiffer for you to notice - al least i don't. Be sure and have the toe end/alignment checked when you put the new tires on. Also, your speedometer will be off 5mph until you get the hypertech or something to recalibrate it with the 285's.
Welcome to the forum and congrats on the new truck!!!

You can upgrade the tire size to 265/75R16 on aftermarket rims with a pretty good offset without doing anything to the torsion bars. This is the tire size I run and there is no rubbing whatsoever.

The dealer's right, there's a TB out telling dealer not to work on tranny if truck has oversized tires on it. You also lose power, slight mileage decreas to, but those 265 and 285's do look better. If you change, keep your old tires, you may need them to get tranny work.

Best bet is to leave well enough alone. You may save yourself some difficulties down the road.

Becuase leaving well enough alone is obviously what everyone on this site is doing.:exactly: :funnypost  :joke: I would not worry about the tire issue.

Most guys who have found this site said "I won't mod my truck" first, then they started reading......):h Soon after, the bank withdrawals start..... :ro)
Just crank the torsions if you want to raise the front, like jflem said. If you want, you can install "green" 1/2 ton torsion keys too....they do the same thing. There is a thread in "Ask the Techs" about the tire size deal. Frankly, I wouldn't worry about it....unless you go crazy like me and put 315's on!
I HIGHLY recommend you do searches of the forum first to get your ?? answered, because at one time or another we've discussed it all....
Welcome to the DP! Prepare to spend money.....

Thanks for everyone's input so far. I've just got to put bigger tires--I can't have my little brother driving his Chevy 1500 HD with 285's and letting me know about my stock 245's!!!
Here's a stupid question: how do I crank the torsion bars? I'm assuming I can take it to a shop and they can do this fairly easily (can you tell I'm mechanically challenged)?
What about the "chips". Which one does everyone like best. I'm wanting a boost in HP and fuel mileage, and still be able to do some light to moderate towing (I'll search the site too).
Oh, and I'm assuming this is just like duck hunting, we NEVER tell our wives just how much it cost!?!:grd:

Yes there is a tsb......going to 285's may cause a shifting problem when towing with a huge emphasis on MAYBE. 265'S SHOULD CAUSE 0 PROBLEMS....as some of the 3500 series dmax/alli combos come stock with 265's. Best programer.....bang for the buck I would have to say the predator along with some gauges. Some good tow tunes and the ability to adjust for tire size and read erase codes.....thats how I would start.

If I were to go to a "chip", is there one out there that would take everything back to stock should I need to take it in for some dealer work? I'm thinking of going to 265's now.
