: PPE Airbox mod analysis
Haulinbass02 04-28-2008, 06:41 PM I finally got around to doing the PPE Airbox mod and all I can say is wow. For a stock truck with no other mods, the PPE mod did a world of wonder. The truck responds better and the mileage on the DIC went up 2 mpg. It appears that the DIC is correct as the tank is lasting quite a bit longer than usual. All this with a very dirty airfilter and fuel filter. Can't wait to see how it goes once I get a PPE tuner for it and exhaust. To anyone that hasn't done this mod, you're missing out on a big benefit to your truck.
Norcal chris 04-29-2008, 12:01 AM just about to do it to my ride, glad to hear good feed back!
MAX4X4 04-29-2008, 09:59 AM I got the same results!
Ruben Z 04-29-2008, 10:55 AM Bah, I did the mod and at first it seemed like it did something. In fact my DIC was reading MPG's in the 20's and high Teens.
It's now back to normal LOL. in the 16's LOL.
MAX4X4 04-29-2008, 12:08 PM Why did it first read high for you and then drop back down?
Does the increased air flow screw the computer up for awhile and then it relearns and goes back down?
I haven't driven mine enough to see it drop down. So far it seems better for me. I'm running a PPE big tune with it though.

I have no idea. It was within a day of driving.
MAX4X4 04-29-2008, 12:31 PM That's weird......I've driven mine modified for a few weeks. I haven't seen mpg numbers on my DIC like I'm seeing now since before I put my lift/tires on. So right now it's awesome.
linetramp 04-29-2008, 05:20 PM What are you guys talking about. I can't find a "PPE airbox mod" on this site, or theres.
MAX4X4 04-29-2008, 06:51 PM It says for 2006-2007........Don't think it's the same for your 2005.

linetramp 04-30-2008, 01:32 PM Your correct. Thanks
axlenut 04-30-2008, 02:48 PM I was just reading that air intake mods confuse the ECM due to higher flow, until it resets the parameters. Some after market manufacturers recommend disconnecting both batteries before making the mod (Volant?), then reconnecting. The ECM then adjusts without throwing a code. Maybe this happens over several run cycles as the ECM adjusts to the increased flow? The DIC mileage would be most effected. I changed the exhaust to a 4" GM Performance, and thought I was getting 28 MPG  - but it was just a fluke - mileage dropped back to 18.6 once everything worked itself out.
MAX4X4 04-30-2008, 03:42 PM Good info!
TexasZX225 05-01-2008, 01:42 AM Is there something with better pictures. I cannot really see what they are cutting out of the airbox or how they are getting the extra air from their pics. They are hard to see with the black plastic.
MAX4X4 05-01-2008, 10:03 AM Look in my garage.
TexasZX225 05-02-2008, 01:40 AM So is it basically opening up the entire end of the airbox to the fender well area?
MAX4X4 05-02-2008, 11:49 AM You cut out the center turbine looking area. That give you a big hole in the end of it. Then you can make that last side cut like my picture shows. I then used four rivets to hold the end piece on....you will know what I'm talking about when you do it. I might have a few more pictures on my computer at home that I can post up.
TexasZX225 05-04-2008, 01:11 AM Please do. I don't want to cut into anything without know what I am trying to accomplish.
I just ran my first tank of fuel through with the partial PPE Box Modification done. I just took out the turbine looking thing. While it's only one tank of fuel, I did get an increase of 1.5 miles/gal (UK gal) better. I was consistently getting around 18, now I posted 19.5. Pretty much the same type of driving - City/Hwy mix.
I'm interested to see if this is sustained.
On a side note, I do like the increased turbo whine. Definately louder.
MAX4X4 05-04-2008, 02:22 AM Take the front off and cut out the turbine looking part. Cut the protrusion off in front of the filter. Look at the pics and you will see what I'm talking about. After you do all this, you can make the big side cut and rivet that piece back on that has that fender seal on it. It will look like the pictures I posted earlier.
DuraRaj 05-04-2008, 03:09 AM Check this pic. Guess which one I kept?
TexasZX225 06-02-2008, 01:32 AM Are you guys still seeing improvement with this mod. My 4" exhaust came in. Was thinking about doing this as will to finish out my breathing improvment.

Honestly I saw no improvement. Added a 4" exhaust and still see no improvement. All these mods are BS. In fact I think after adding my 4" straight piped exhaust my performance went DOWN. Truck seems to struggle more to get up and go. Unless its just my mind thinking that way because of sound.
