: PPEs GT4094R on my LMM Done!
MMLMM 04-28-2008, 04:55 PM Well the 4094 from PPE is on and the LMM is running. Chad and Alex of Alligator Performance, and Jordan took on this project without hesitation. The LMMs seem to be kinda a PITA to get to a lot of nesessary parts for just the removal. Once everything was out of the way and the VVT was gone it was time for the 4094. Miniture problems arose very often with this install but were rendered easily. Friday night I came to the shop after work and things were very close. There were a few little things that needed to be done before I would take a quick test run up the street and freeway before heading to Fontana. About 2AM, yes they stayed until it was done so I could run it in Fontana, I was rolling home to grab a couple things and headed west.
On the way down, the intercooler boot was cut by a clamp that created a boost leak. That was taken care of. The 90* elbow in the turbo oil feed had loosened up and created a oil leak. A few more turns on it from the guys of SoCal Black Smoke Club and it was pretty much cured. Anyway I got to put a run in and couldnt get the brakes to hold tight enough to build much boost, red light came on so I went for it and ran a 13.5. The second run felt better even know I left the line with 8-10psi and another red light, however the intercooler boot blew off just pass the 1/8th. I have the brake issue worked out now, (I think).
On the way home, Sunday, Chad met me at his shop with Jordan ready to fix any problems we developed. We went for like 3-4 hours trying to get the factory boot to work, however on my truck it will not happen. We have a few ideas to cure it and we should have it taken care of this week.
All in all the turbo is awesome, on the highway it freaking rocks. Cruising about 75ish and lay into it you go for one hell of a ride pretty quick to over 120ish easliy. This turbo is loud, you can hear the whistle like crazy. Its very fun and after getting tuning and the little bugs worked out, it should be awesome.
Huge thanks to Alligator Performance and Jordan, you guys did great and worked hard, all the way to 2AM in the morning.
Also, again thanks to my friends of the SoCal Black Smoke club, they were an awesome help at the track.
jdugie123 04-28-2008, 04:57 PM that good to hear i always like the shops that want to work on trucks as much as you

this i can vouch for..... :D ... pulls as hard from 70-80mph up to 120 as most truck do from 20-50 mph..... makes for one hell of a ride.
malibu795 04-28-2008, 06:45 PM whihc turbine housing did you get with it?
THE TECH 04-28-2008, 06:48 PM Glad everything is back together properly now Mike. Wish we coulda done better for you at the track. Damn boot!!

MMLMM 04-28-2008, 10:36 PM Want to sell your factory VNT?
I have 3 ideas and uou would be involved in 2 of them? pm me an offer, LOL.
Hammer 4 04-28-2008, 11:26 PM Good work on the LMM MIke..that pup is gonna fly once you guys it sorted out...! :D
RENODMAX 04-29-2008, 12:13 AM It was fun Mike. Im glad everything is all sorted out. Weird how your truck got louder on Sunday:rolleyes:. Im glad i was a part of it. Late night but it was a ton of fun. I feel sorry for your tires after that 10psi boosted 2wd launch we did haha. I gotta thank Johnny for getting the right stuff from PPE, and all the other So Cal guys that helped out. Also thanks to Mike for being so cool its nice to actually have people hang out at the shop and not complain about you working or anything. That boot is stupid, 1/8" too short it seems. I will be sending you a clamp setup with some straps welded to it Mike and you can use it on the pipe once you get it flared. Figure at that much boost the more reinforcement you have the better. Is that boot still holding on? Also you and Chad both need to get some damn pictures up! Thanks for the burger too. I dont know what AR the turbine is. I just put it on haha.

Also if you have pictures you wanna post up feel free, I'd like to see them too :)
deadsquirrel 04-29-2008, 02:09 AM that is one of the coolest LMMs i have ever seen. awesome truck!!!

RENODMAX 04-29-2008, 02:23 PM Did you guys get the boot sorted yet?
AlligatorPerformance 04-29-2008, 02:24 PM Got a few things in the works...
RENODMAX 04-29-2008, 02:29 PM Found a shop to do the stuff yet?
AlligatorPerformance 04-29-2008, 02:34 PM Talked to a couple of places yesterday and have found a couple of interim solutions, and a possible permanent solution within a month or so. Mike an I were both busy as hell yesterday so we couldn't meet up, hopefully today.
RENODMAX 04-29-2008, 02:35 PM cool. ill think i have some of those clamps lying around if i get a chance ill get some straps welded to them
fire0021 04-29-2008, 03:04 PM cool. ill think i have some of those clamps lying around if i get a chance ill get some straps welded to them
I still dont know why the stock one didnt work for you its exactley the same as mine ?
AlligatorPerformance 04-29-2008, 03:28 PM I still dont know why the stock one didnt work for you its exactley the same as mine ?
Tommy, I wish I had the same luck as you did with the stock boot, but this one will not stay on. Mike can attest to that, as he watched everything we did and tried to make the stocker work. The clamp just slips off the side and will not remain on with anything we try.
RENODMAX 04-29-2008, 03:47 PM its just by about an eighth of an inch. pretty stupid really. but nothing a pipe flare cant fix.

RENODMAX 04-29-2008, 06:25 PM or just get a bead on that pipe and put real silicone on it :D
MMLMM 04-29-2008, 07:04 PM or just get a bead on that pipe and put real silicone on it :D
Were good, doing the clamp idea, gonna be ready hopefully this week.
My buddy in Colorado is gonna check with his parts counter and measure a few boots to see if theres a possiable diff. in some of the sizes ;)
RENODMAX 04-29-2008, 07:21 PM sweet. ill get that other clamp setup and send it down in a while as a back up. itll be free anyway :D
gasuout 04-29-2008, 08:36 PM The boot thing is easy fix . Easiest way is to cut intercooler tube and clock it a bit and reweld it . And use the factory boots top and bottom . Thats my opinion . Also once a boot (stock) blows out a few times , it gets wear spots in it and a new boot might be needed . Look inside of boot and look at the groove for tube in boot , it might be compromized . And clean clean clean the mating surfaces of tube and boot with brake cleaner . Any oil residual will also make this difficult to keep on .
Not really sure why it didnt fit right . It fit on Fire0021's set-up . Did it blow the tube out and bend it a little prior .
If your going to use the style boot you are now , you must put a protruding bead around the intercooler tube top and bottom or it will never stay on like that . PPE has a bead roller just for doing this . Its used all the time on custom intercooler tubing . At any psi it will keep blowing off till you give it a bead to hold onto with clamp.
I also would use a better and stronger boot than was used . There is better boot material available that is stronger and for diesels stuff and high boost applications . Just seemed weak to me . And why was the lower boot also changed . Did it not fit either ??? . Same tube ,same size, didnt really get it . I know cutting tube and rewelding it seems tough , but that was the fix for kodiak when I had to do custom intake to get 2 CP3's on truck . We changed angle on intake and cut out egr section and had to clock the intercooler tube to make it fit properly . It was actually pretty easy .
Either way stock boots or after market , you guys will get it all figured out .
I was glad to see you guys get right on it . Says alot on pride and getting issues solved as soon as possible by a shop . :thumb: Chad
Well it was awesome to see another LMM with the bigger turbo , and it sounds wicked too .
And getting you the parts needed at track and helping out with repairs at track is just how its suppose to be . Always a pleasure to help out brother diesel guys . Just took a few phone calls to the right people to make it happen . Dan at PPE was right there for me and hooking Mike up with the parts and Ray Maxedout310 was on his way out to track and I called and asked him stop and get the clamps and gasket we needed with a small detour to PPE . I really wanted to take the intercooler tube and run to PPE and roll a few beads on it . But we were trying to get Mike a couple passes and get into the 12's by trying some new clamps doubled up . Almost made it down the track without it coming off again .
Not bad at all for late night midnight install and your first LMM turbo install , and then a test drive 600 miles . There could have been many other issues that could have come up .
These were minor things that happen on installs like this .
:thumb: Johnny
RENODMAX 04-29-2008, 09:17 PM The lower boot was stock johnny. Thats just what they look like. The boot never blew off on the test runs. We are going to have the pipe rolled so a higher grade silicone can be used, the other stuff is all chad could find at the very moment. Chad was looking for place to roll a bead onto the pipe, it wont need to be cut down or anything, the angles and distance are how the are supposed to be pretty much. The turbo seems like it sat just about an 1/8" too far away from the intercooler pipe to get the stock clamps on effectively. I have been trying to get ahold of your ass pick up the phone Johnny!
MMLMM 04-29-2008, 09:48 PM The Stock boot works fine on pipe side, not on new turbo side.
The after market boot works fine on the turbo, not on the pipe side.
I decided I want to retain factory boot. We have designed a clamp that in in the process of being built right now. IT WILL WORK! The setup we are running right now with factory boot is holding just not pretty, thats why we are making the new clamp.
The lower boot is stock.
Welding a bead on intercooler pipe/rolling the edge will be good for an after market boot.
With stock boot, and stock clamping style, and stock intercooler pipe, and 4094, it WILL NOT work on my truck, I have not the slightest clue why. I am guessing the boots are not perfect and could be a hair short or a hair long on others, it would work if the boot was seriously 1/8-3/16 of an inch longer on turbo side. There should be no more debate, 4 of us now have verified this by trying it.
We have a solution, I'll post pics of it soon.
also wait till you see the catch can I am building, simple, easy, cheap, and you all will want one, lol. :D
Thanks again everyone!
RENODMAX 04-29-2008, 09:54 PM ahah thanks mike. sometimes you just cant say it enough apparently. i dont get why everyone thinks the bottom boot is aftermarket haha.
gasuout 04-29-2008, 10:17 PM Well it's all clear now ...... gotcha !!
Just trying to help , last time I blew a boot off turbo it cost me an input shaft in transmission .

Don't get me wrong, I know everyone is helping and I appreciate that so much, I was just trying to clear it up a bit, LOL.
oh and jordan, everyone thinks bottom boot is AM because it looked like the AM top one we had, I thought it was aftermarket too :)

RENODMAX 04-29-2008, 11:24 PM yeah the bottom and top boots are totally different which is odd. oh well it will all get sorted not really a big issue at all. what rail psi are you running through your tune tommy?

Johnny,
Thanks for the kind words, we sure could have used more test and tune time, but we wanted to get mike out to Fontana for the 5:30 Tech. the fix Mike decided on is going to work fine and will retain the stock boot which is the best route to go.
I talked to Dan at PPE today and he said if we sent down the pipe he would roll a bead too.
Hope your truck is coming together, I know your in good hands but let me know if you need anything.
Chad
RENODMAX 04-29-2008, 11:42 PM Seriously this is what its all about people coming together to help other diesel guys out. Its awesome. You should hear Mikes truck now Johnny. :D
