: Intercooler Question
MrTailLight 02-10-2005, 11:27 PM it may seem silly to you experts, but i have to ask....
can an intercooler be mounted in front of, or partly in front of the radiator?
will the cooling of the intercooler restrict to much on the radiator?
i can find them all day long that would fit awesome in this location!
or would i be better off to find an intercooler and locate it below the radiator?
Turbine Doc 02-11-2005, 12:11 AM Most ICs are in grille GM did not put one on the 6.5 nor did they give us much real estate to do it ourself, under bumper has more real estate, not best but better than no IC, several have custom fit one in grill but taint easy
GMCfourX4 02-11-2005, 10:40 AM I managed to squeeze a Cummins intercooler in front of the radiator, but it required a LOT of work... I had to cut the radiator support, remove the clutch fan in favor of Flex-A-Lite dual-electrics, and weld new radiator supports to move the radiator a couple inches towards the motor to make room..... I still haven't gotten the plumbing run, but I'm trying to get that done soon, and then we'll see what the difference is...
If I had to do it again, I would at least consider a good-sized air/water intercooler, and add a second radiator to cool the water (I think one identical to the factory one would work well, but you'd still have to move the engine's radiator to make room...)

MrTailLight 02-11-2005, 01:06 PM sounds like either way i go, it will take some work to install a good size IC. i have seen the "kits" for $1300 and there is not a chance of that happening!
i'll just keep looking for a good size IC and make it fit somewhere.
93_Burrito 02-11-2005, 01:45 PM There's a guy who stuffed a Powerstroke intercooler behind the grill of his '94 Chevy and he kept the radiator in its stock location. He made a 2" tray in front of the radiator for the intercooler to rest on.
I saved the pics so I can show the guy who'll be lucky enough to install my intercooler. I snagged a Dodge intercooler from a '98 Ram off Ebay, after shipping it was about $225.
nvmtnlion 02-11-2005, 05:40 PM Oh man! The guy covered up his "Nostrils" in his bumper with lights? Sounds like a :badidea: to me. Those things provide cooling don't they?
Juancho 02-11-2005, 06:03 PM I don't know about cooling, but with the nostrils covered up there is no where to put the remote mounted PMD. :-)
Turbine Doc 02-11-2005, 06:54 PM Yes they are supposed to route air up if the dams are still in place, also eliminated the "maintenance steps" can't fit your foot in the bumper now and work in the engine bay.

93_Burrito 02-11-2005, 10:27 PM Okay, you guys jumped on the lights in the bumper... gotta post two more pics...
quantum mechanic 02-11-2005, 11:40 PM That's what I'm talking 'bout. Malcom Cross's TT chevy cummins.

93_Burrito 02-12-2005, 10:09 AM Okay, one more pic... just to show how the truck sits with that solid front axle...
SuperTuscan 02-12-2005, 10:17 AM How did that solid front axle conversion go? What kit did you use?
93_Burrito 02-12-2005, 10:50 AM SuperTuscan,
That's not my truck. Mine is below in this post. I did pick up a Dana 60 from a '79 Ford F-350 which will be going under my truck. I don't know all the details of the other truck, but I like the outcome. A solid axle swap will lift the truck about 3" alone. I like the thought of going 3" and then I could easily fit 33's, which I think would make the truck look pretty tough. Thing is, I've seen pics of other trucks that are lifted 6" and sit on 35's and I really like those. It's a tough call... more practicality versus being a bigger galoot. Going from 3" to 6" down the road wouldn't be tough either since the major mods would have already taken place.
The black truck pictured is my old '97 K2500. If it had an 8' bed I'm sure I'd still have it. It had a 350, which was okay... 5-speed and 14-bolt FF, too. The tires on it are 33x12.50x16.5. Torsion bars were cranked up some, but it made the ride real harsh. Should have been lifted. Man, I miss the subwoofers in that truck, too.
