I have 36,400 miles on my truck. The dealer replace the sterring shaft befoe we went to Florida pulling our 12,000 fiver. I still got the pop in the steering with or with our the trailer. It seems to doing it when I turn hard left. Any Ideas? I am taking it back to GM in a few days.

I just got back from dealer and they think it was the steering stops. They lub. them. It was a rather loud pop but it very cold here today and you could hardly hear it.

Had the same problem, but after the lube it went away and has not come back so far. On the list for the change though.

I was getting some pretty serious pops while turning hard at 75,000 miles, evidentally it was because the upper ball joints were about ready to fall out of the truck! What was odd is that there were NO other symptoms. If you are running with a lift kit and/or aftermarket wheels with a heavy offset they are exposed to alot more wear, and subject to premature failure. These ball joints need to be tested while loaded....

Does it happen when the suspension is in a slight bind, like when turning up a hill?

Are your torsion bars cranked? I turned mine three turns and started getting pops went back to stock and no more problem.

no the torsion bars have not been touched. It does it on flat ground turning to the left. Yesterday I was near a fellow who is as good as i know on front end aliment. I showed to him and he thinks torsion bars mount. He had it before with a 2500 heavy duty. He said the mounts are different than other GM trucks. Tomorrow it is going back to the dealer and they are keeping it until they find it.

There is a TSB in reference to the lower steering joint. They are replacing them as parts are available. Mean time if they grease it the noise goes away. Mine did it even just hiting small bumps in the road, the whole steering column shook.

There is also a TSB about a popping noise coming from the front crossmember. The repair is to remove the crossmember and slot the left mounting holes. TSB# 03-08-61-002B

My truck is at the dealer now. I show the service manager you TSB GMCSID and it pissed him off. Now I am pissed because it been back four times for this trouble. If they don't fix it this time tomorrow I am going to the owner and raise a little hell. I just want it fixed and I promise I won't bother them again ever!!!!

I got the truck back yesterday and they greased the truck. It is cold today so I can not check it out. The only trouble with that is I grease the truck myself. I been doing my own service work for over 40 years. The truck was greased around 7k miles ago. I am taking it to the guy who has done my front end work for the last 10 years he is the best that I know of. I am out of warrenty now anyway. I will just pay to get it fixed and buy the next one from a dealer who will listen. I usually buy from another dealer anyway. This dealer had the truck I was looking for. Next time I will wait, it don't pay to get in a hurry.

bearnc1,

Any luck in finding it out (what it was)?

I have a single pop noise when braking and turn at slow speed manuvers.

I have r&r the front cross member, but it's still there.

Looking for a solution.

Turning into a parking space and soon as I touch the brakes I hear and feel it. Kinda like hitting a small patch of ice on pavement.

I bought my truck at <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Moore in Jacksonville and have had great Sales and service from them. Luke Trosclair is the salesman I have been dealing with for the last 5 years, if you tell him I sent you I’ll get $100.00 referral. I can pm you my info if you want it. The dealer in New Bern was way to pushy and the sale man was a young smart ass when I was talking to him, so the wife pulled me away before I smoked he.

If you have a 4x4 it might be possible that one of the front drive half shafts has a bad CV joint. This would be accentuated during an extreme hard turn, (steering wheel turned as far as it will go). Just a thought.

Might be, but when I have those replaced it made a bad noise continuously while turning.

THIS is a SINLGE 'pop' noise...kinda like hitting a small patch of ice on p[ave ment while turning...gives that little 'shift' of the truck.:help:
