Have any of you guys had trouble with the rust in your front bumper?? I have had rust on the inside of it for quite a while now and recently took it in for repair. I undertand that there is a TSB calling for a protective coating to be applied in the bumper. The dealer was aware of this and claims to have performed the repair properly.

If the repair was performed properly, than it is a shotty repair procedure. If not, the dealer did a shotty job. In less than a month after the repair, I have new rust forming. They were kind enough to send me a survey so that I could inform them of my displeasure, although I would not be surprised if it goes right to the circular file.

Has anyone else had this TSB repair done? If so are you satisfied? Has anyone else with this problem repaired it in a different way? If so, how?

Thanks for your replies,

Greg

Its going to rust, look at the rest of your under carriage! Thank you for the salt! Hell, even if you don't drive in the salt it will rust under there! Rust is your problem, unless you got a good dealer.

Mine is rusting through from under the black strip on the top of the bumper under the grill. 38k miles and rusting? Anyone know if rust through on the bumper is part of the rust-through coverage? Not meaning to hijack...

I guess I should be thankful. The chromed plastic grille on the Dodge is rusting!!! -:t

What I am refering to is a known problem with the bumpers. I am talking about rust on brand new bumpers. When I originally took it in for the problem (June 2003) about have of the vehicle on the lot had rusty bumpers and mine was only three months old at the time. If you look inside of the front bumper through the holes in the front, that is where it is rusting. There is also a bit creeping out the front license plate holes. I don't think you see this problem on the newer trucks. I understand that there was a material problem a while go, hence the TSB.

HeavyD...I've posted about my experience with my front bumper before, but I will tell you about my encounter.

I purchased my '03 in October of '02. I put the winter covers on in December when the weather turned really cold. I followed the instructions of removing the covers to clean them and the surface underneath after 30 days. When I removed the cover, I freaked. In the corners of the bumper underneath the 2 lower corners of the grille, the bumper was showing signs of rust. I cleaned it up and never, ever put the bumper cover on again. So...after the second season, it pitted and started rusting really bad. I took it to the stealer and was told that I was SOL because they said it was caused by lack of care. So after I heard of the TSB, this last fall, I took it back in. Got the same story. Lack of care.

Granted...I own a dually and can't drive it through the carwash every other day. But it gets washed when the roads dry after the storms. This was explained to the stealer. Still no warranty or TSB work. So...here I am with a rusting bumper.

Good Luck with yours! I hope you get better results with your stealer than I did!

My front bumper was rusting inside (could see through the holes) and I just let it slide until it started rusting on the top up by the grill. I took it to the nearest GMC dealer and the said rust on the inside gets a coating applied there, rust on the outside gets a new bumper. Waited a week for it to come in but they coated it with their special sauce anyway just for good measure. FREEBIE, Zip, Zero, Nada. Waranties are great when they work.:)

Im waiting for the local rep to get back to me. My 04' is rusting from the back siide out. I called the dealer and started blasting him 2 weeks ago when I first noticed it. I realize it isn't his fault but he pissed me off when he said they probably should have a fix out sometime this summer! Summer? My ass! $45K truck and it can't go a year without rust! BS!

I brought mine to the dealer a few months ago (along with the TSB number) due to the rust on the "inside" of the front bumper; they took off the bumper & painted the back of it with some sort of black sealant . . . looks nice; not sure how long it'll last, but does look good . . .

T.P.N. - I received the same repair on the inside of my bumper as well. Looked nice at the time, but did not last a month. I will be taking it back to the dealer when I get some time.

I coated the insides of my bumpers with LPS-3 aircraft spray, and it stopped the rust. It leaves a oil film on the inside of the bumper sort of like a wax type coating - rust preventative. The product guide said to recoat every two years for maximum protection. If its good enough for aircraft then its good for my 2500HD.

Engineer Bill - Where did you get that product? Is any special surface prep required? Thanks,

Greg
