: 2006 EPA Emissions Mandate....
joispoi 02-10-2005, 05:00 PM Even though I'd rather talk about other things, this topic deserves it's own thread. What's the deal with the 2006 diesel emissions test rumor? I tried a google search to get some facts and found nothing. Where can I learn more about it?
Personally I don't believe it's going to happen. Mainly for two reasons.
1. I don't want to believe it.
2. If the gov't sets up a new test for 2006, they'll probably run it for 2 months then shut it down for 20 months while they figure out how to fix the new system.
Anybody have a weblink they can share that has info about the test?
95-6.5 02-10-2005, 11:15 PM Why worry? You should be grandfathered in.
Turbine Doc 02-10-2005, 11:24 PM Not if his truck came with a S code engine he is in voilation now if he does not have functioning emissions equipment. #8 digit in VIN is key, F should be grandfathered, S a whole nuther story, also some F trucks with cats also, if it was stickered to say catalyst equipped engine bingo you get hosed also.
95-6.5 02-10-2005, 11:27 PM True...but pull off the sticker from the valve cover and nobody knows...I really dont think the 18yr old operating the equipment is going to pay that much attention to a diesel engine.i have an F code that does have the sticker that says catylyst equiped.Of course its not anymore.cat go bye bye in dumpster. Also removed the lable from the vavle cover just in case.I've had plenty do a visual and as soon as they see the diesel stickers on the hood they say nevermind...
Dave 2001 02-11-2005, 01:04 AM We've been testing diesel here for over two years now. We even have four wheel drive dynos. Nobody got grandfather in. It's brutal up here, but the good thing is the standards are not like in CA.
joispoi 02-11-2005, 06:04 AM The good news is, the truck has the F. Of course it also has the cat. I look for sticker and take it off. Maybe keep old pipes in case of testing problem-:t
SuperTuscan 02-11-2005, 08:46 AM Don't they enter VIN information into the testing station computer system? At least in OH, you give them the VIN and they pull up your record. They didn't give me a good look at the screen, but I would imagine it is a simple transactional database showing previous test results. It also gave some basic information on the vehicle. IF this system says your truck came equipped with a cat, and your last 3 visits passed visual inspection, THEN I think your vehicle had better have something that looks like a cat even though you don't have a sticker or cat.
I am seriously looking at a set of these for my next exhaust system.

joispoi 02-11-2005, 10:42 AM what exactly are we looking at there?
Turbine Doc 02-11-2005, 11:28 AM Vee band clamps(Mormon clamps in jet engine world) like on your turbo down pipe, easy on/easy off weld some vee band flanges to your cat in & out, gives you ability to remove when off road driving, and put test pipe in it's place with vee band flanges on it, when finished offroading  put cat back on.
Mine is set up similar I recycled my old down pipe flange, welded to my test pipe on one end, & other I use a slip hub with a stainless wrap around clamp to secure to exhaust pipe on muffler inlet. Strictly for my offroad treks, I'm street legal most of the time:D
gmctd 02-11-2005, 12:09 PM They use a laser scanner across the VIN, here - automatically sets up and tells them which probe to use, and what to look for.
They use a mirror-on-a-stick, walk around the vehicle, looking up underside, particularly in the exhaust system area.
Word is the CAT does no restrict much at all. You may be barking up the wrong tree ):h and removing it or making it removable may not do much good.
In the NE USA I don't think they care about diesels. The breeze sends it up to Canada.
ssorange 02-11-2005, 01:59 PM So are we talking about a nation wide standard test? What GVW range? Years? Any more info on this would be appreciated. Any links too.
Thanks,
John

Hmmm, I know of a "cat" that was removed at about 160,000 miles and it was getting plug with soot.
ronniejoe 02-11-2005, 08:09 PM Vee band clamps(Mormon clamps in jet engine world) like on your turbo down pipe,
TD, sorry to be picky, but it's actually "Marmon" clamp. Mormons have a high population density in Utah.

Are you saying the cat provides no restriction to the exhaust system? I find that difficult to believe. But, if you have some data or links, I am willing to read what you got.
